About the Role
This position provides leadership, management, direction, and vision to software engineers and/or development employees including offshore contractors/consultants and interns needed to support, run, and change activities in the software development life cycle. The position works closely with development peers, product and project leaders/managers, and other in-house software developers as well as directs the successful completion and delivery of respective software components and any other related deliverables. The position is additionally expected to report progress to senior management. Additional responsibilities may include oversight of the department budget, identifying and supporting talent, and defining resource requirements and allocations
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Delivery
Own the technical vision and roadmap for AI/ML capabilities across one or more product areas, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance of ML systems in production.
Lead design and implementation of end-to-end AI solutions using LLMs, RAG, agentic systems, MCP, and vector databases on AWS / Azure / GCP.
Guide teams in building robust data and ML platforms, including data ingestion, feature engineering, experimentation, CI/CD for ML (MLOps), and observability.
Review and contribute to high-impact code, architectures, and design documents; ensure adherence to engineering and architectural standards.
Champion test-driven development, automated testing, and secure coding practices across services and ML pipelines.
JD-Machine Learning Mgr
Oversee system and user acceptance testing cycles to ensure high-quality, reliable business solutions.
People & Team Management
Manage, coach, and grow a high-performing team of software / ML / data / MLOps engineers, including offshore or partner resources where applicable.
Drive performance management: set clear goals, provide ongoing feedback, conduct reviews, and support career development and upskilling in AI/ML technologies.
Foster a culture of ownership, psychological safety, experimentation, and continuous improvement.
Plan and allocate resources effectively across initiatives, balancing roadmap delivery, technical debt, and innovation.
Stakeholder & Partner Management
Collaborate with product management and business stakeholders to define AI use cases, success metrics, and delivery plans.
Serve as primary technical point of contact for external technology partners and vendors, including offshore teams and managed service providers.
Communicate technical strategy, tradeoffs, and progress to senior leadership in a clear, outcome-oriented way.
Work with operations, security, and compliance teams to ensure AI solutions meet regulatory, privacy, and ethical standards.
Governance, Standards & Strategy
Define and enforce engineering best practices, coding standards, and architectural guardrails for AI/ML systems.
Contribute to the evolution of enterprise data and AI architecture, ensuring alignment with broader technology strategy.
Participate in budget planning and tracking for team headcount, tooling, and cloud / compute resources.
Stay current with industry trends in generative AI, LLMs, vector search, and ML platforms; recommend pragmatic adoption paths.
Required Qualifications
10+ years of professional software development and/or data/ML engineering experience, including delivering production systems at scale.
JD-Machine Learning Mgr
2+ years of people management experience leading engineering or ML teams (hiring, coaching, performance management, and resource planning).
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field; advanced degree (MSc/PhD) in ML/AI or related area preferred.
Technical Skills
Deep expertise in modern AI/ML technologies, including:
Large Language Models (LLMs), retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and agentic workflows.
Vector databases and similarity search.
Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and cloud-native architectures (containers, Kubernetes, serverless).
Strong proficiency in Python and ML engineering best practices (modular code, testing, packaging, CI/CD).
Hands-on experience with ML frameworks and tools such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, Hugging Face, and orchestration/ML Ops tooling (e.g., Kubeflow, MLflow, SageMaker, Vertex AI, Databricks).
Strong foundation in data modeling, SQL and NoSQL databases, and working with large, complex data sets.
Proven experience designing and operating large-scale, distributed systems with high availability and observability.
Experience leading or collaborating with offshore or partner teams, including managed services and staff augmentation models.
