Job Description

Seeking an experienced commercial real estate attorney for the position of AVP, Leasing Counsel to be part of the Legal Leasing management team reporting to the Vice President, Leasing Counsel.    

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The AVP, Leasing Counsel position calls for a seasoned professional who takes a thoughtful and solutions-oriented approach to issues within the framework of the business directives of the company, in order to reach a beneficial resolution to the  completion of lease negotiation and drafting and related matters.  This  position entails a combination of (a) education and training of departmental staff on handling complex lease negotiations and draftsmanship, including taking a leadership role periodically to form and manage a team to address key projects, (b) coordination with other departments on company goals, including providing legal counsel to other departments, including language interpretation and risk assessment of various courses of action, (c) performance of individual legal responsibilities including drafting and negotiating leases and ancillary/related documents in a manner that protects the landlord to the greatest extent possible, doing so within a timeline that maximizes the landlord’s opportunity for earlier rent commencements, and (d) taking a professional customer service approach toward the completion of all required duties/tasks. 

The AVP, Leasing Counsel must have the ability to provide counsel and guidance on complex language/issues and resolve complex issues where staff is unable to find a satisfactory resolution. The AVP, Leasing Counsel should be a positive, proactive and energetic professional who assisting staff members with problem solving and encouraging critical thought while providing a business perspective to the staff in the performance of their duties.   Must have demonstrated ability to effectively train and develop lesser experienced staff. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed and in good standing to practice law within at least one State in the United States.
  • Minimum of 12 years experience in advising clients with regard to complex commercial real estate matters including development/construction projects, retail and restaurant leases within a shopping center environment; either with a retail developer, a national/regional retailer or a law firm which routinely represents commercial real estate clients.

  • Ability to negotiate effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a high volume, fast-paced environment.
  • Strong teamwork and leadership skills.
  • Minimum of 5 years staff management preferred.
