The Opportunity

As a Senior Platform Engineer (SDE3) at NAB, you will be a technical leader, architect, and mentor, driving the evolution of the core platforms that power our entire engineering organization. This role moves beyond feature delivery to owning the design and implementation of large-scale, resilient, and secure systems. You will tackle complex technical challenges, such as building ephemeral on-demand environments from scratch, optimizing our multi-cloud Kubernetes strategy, and embedding security deep within the software development lifecycle. You will have a significant impact not only on our technology but also on our colleagues, actively mentoring junior engineers and fostering a culture of technical excellence. What You'll Do

As a SDE3, you will be responsible for the architecture and delivery of critical platform capabilities, ensuring they meet the highest standards of security, scalability, and reliability.

• Lead Technical Design and Architecture: Lead the architectural design and implementation of major platform initiatives. You will be responsible for creating robust, scalable, and secure solutions that solve complex problems for our internal development teams.
• Build Risk-Mitigated Financial Systems: Architect and build highly available and fault-tolerant systems that meet the stringent security, compliance, and risk mitigation requirements of a large-scale financial institution.
• Drive DevSecOps Adoption: Champion and implement DevSecOps best practices across the platform. You will design and integrate automated security scanning, policy enforcement, and compliance checks directly into our CI/CD pipelines to create a secure-by-default environment.
• Master Multi-Cloud and Kubernetes: Act as a subject matter expert on our multi-cloud (AWS and Google Cloud) infrastructure and our enterprise-scale Kubernetes platform. You will drive improvements in scalability, performance, and cost-efficiency.
• Define and Manage Reliability: Define, measure, and evolve platform Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and error budgets, using data-driven approaches to balance innovation speed with operational stability.
• On Demand Environments: Design advanced ephemeral environments with intelligent resource management and cost optimization
• Mentor and Develop Talent: Actively mentor SDE1 and SDE2 engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and pair programming. You will play a crucial role in leveling up the technical capabilities of the entire team and fostering an inclusive, learning-based culture.
• Influence Technical Strategy: Collaborate with architects and other senior engineers to influence the technical direction of the NAB Engineering Foundation, evaluating new technologies and advocating for best practices.

What You'll Bring

We are looking for a technical leader with deep expertise in building and operating large-scale platforms and a passion for mentoring others.

• Experience: 6-8 years of experience in Platform Engineering, DevOps, backend or a related field, with a proven track record of designing and delivering complex, mission-critical infrastructure projects.
• Multi-Cloud Expertise: Deep, hands-on expertise in both AWS and Azure. You should have experience designing, deploying, and managing solutions that span multiple cloud environments.
• Container Orchestration: Expert-level knowledge of Kubernetes and the broader cloud-native ecosystem. This includes a deep understanding of Kubernetes networking (CNI), security (RBAC, Network Policies), storage, and scalability patterns.
• Secure CI/CD Architecture: Extensive experience architecting and building secure, fully automated CI/CD pipelines for complex microservices architectures. You understand how to embed security and compliance into the entire lifecycle.
• Nack for Risk and Security: As part of being a banking / financial institution, security and risk in ingrained in our daily activity. A key competency would be not just building great tech but also building with the best practices of security & risk ingrained in our daily decisions.
• Strong Architectural Skills: Proven ability to make sound architectural decisions, considering trade-offs between performance, reliability, security, and cost. You can clearly articulate and document your designs.
• Leadership and Mentorship: Demonstrated experience mentoring and developing junior engineers, with a passion for sharing knowledge and elevating the skills of those around you.

Good to Have

These qualifications demonstrate a forward-thinking and strategic approach to platform engineering:

• Experience with modern CI/CD orchestration and continuous delivery platforms like Harness.
• Experience in designing and building internal developer platforms or self-service portals using frameworks like Backstage, potentially leveraging TypeScript for custom plugins.
• A keen interest in applying AI/GenAI to platform engineering challenges such as predictive scaling, anomaly detection, or intelligent cost optimization, developer agents, pipeline agents, test agents etc.
• Familiarity with FinOps principles and practices for managing cloud costs at scale.
