Job Description

We are looking for an Epidemiologist to conduct surveillance, investigations, and provide technical assistance for public health efforts. This position will be Full-Time and Hybrid in Indianapolis, IN.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide prompt technical assistance to health care providers, local health departments, members of the public, and other audiences as appropriate

  • Coordinate with the IDOH Laboratories, health care providers, local health departments, and members of the public to arrange prompt diagnostic testing for reportable disease conditions where appropriate

  • Conduct surveillance for reportable disease conditions using the state electronic disease surveillance system (NBS), the state syndromic surveillance system (ESSENCE), and other systems as appropriate

  • Develop educational materials for health care providers, local health departments, the public, and other audiences as appropriate

  • Complete assigned investigations independently and report findings of interest to the AR Epidemiologist II

  • Assist the AR Epidemiologist II with surveillance and investigation of individual cases and outbreaks of reportable disease conditions

  • Provide surge capacity for data entry of relevant reports and laboratory results as needed

  • Serve as a backup to the AR Epidemiologist II in their absence

  • Related duties as assigned

What You'll Need

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., public health, biological sciences), OR 2+ years of public health experience

  • Ability to quickly acquire detailed knowledge of reportable disease conditions relevant to the position

  • Ability to ascertain the existence of a public health threat by gathering and interpreting relevant information

  • Ability to properly interpret and communicate state regulations and public health guidance documents

  • Ability to identify appropriate indications for public health laboratory testing

  • Ability to identify appropriate interventions for prevention of reportable disease conditions

  • Ability to perform descriptive analyses of surveillance data and identify key findings

  • Ability to identify limitations of surveillance data and support evaluation of surveillance systems

  • Ability to prepare written and oral reports, presentations, and educational materials that communicate necessary information to internal and external partners

  • Ability to elicit relevant information from patients in structured or unstructured telephone interviews

  • Ability to use appropriate informatics tools in support of work activities

  • Ability to provide prompt, courteous, and helpful customer service

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external partners

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing

  • Ability to prioritize tasks efficiently to meet internal and external deadlines

  • Ability to appropriately document work activities and maintain organized records using assigned systems

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

  • Ability to design and execute epidemiologic or other relevant scientific studies

  • Competence in statistical and/or geospatial software (e.g., Epi Info, SAS, ArcGIS)

Preferred:

  • Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., public health, biological sciences)

Physical Demands 

  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA and other federal, state, and local standards

  • Ability to conduct repetitive tasks on a computer, utilizing a mouse, keyboard, and monitor

  • Must be able to communicate with customers/team members over the phone and in person

  • Sedentary work that involves sitting or remaining stationary most of the time with occasional need to move around the office to attend meetings, etc.

$32.51 per hour

The pay range for this position is listed above. Exact compensation may vary based on several factors, including location, experience, and education. Benefit packages include medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as 401k retirement account access. Employees in this role may also be entitled to paid sick leave and/or other paid time off as provided by applicable law.
