About Anthropic

Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.

About the role

We are seeking a Compute Cost of Revenue Accountant to join our Accounting team at Anthropic. In this role, you will own the financial accounting, allocation, and reporting for compute-related Cost of Revenue (COR). As Anthropic scales its AI infrastructure, accurate COR accounting and cost allocation are critical to understanding the economics of our products and informing strategic investment decisions. You will develop and refine allocation methodologies, implement and maintain accounting policies for overhead and direct cost attribution, and ensure proper COR classification across our expanding product suite. Compute is the largest expense category at Anthropic and is critical to understanding the gross margin of our business. This is an opportunity to build foundational accounting processes at a company operating at the frontier of AI.

Responsibilities:

  • Own end-to-end Cost of Revenue accounting for compute-related costs, ensuring accurate classification, reporting, and month-end close activities

  • Design, implement, and maintain COR allocation methodologies that accurately attribute overhead and direct costs to product lines and business segments

  • Build and manage ERP allocation schedules to automate cost distribution and ensure consistency across reporting periods

  • Scope and formulate accounting policies governing how infrastructure costs are allocated to Cost of Revenue vs. Operating Expenses

  • Partner with Finance & Strategy to analyze COR trends, gross margin impacts, cost efficiency metrics, and unit economics

  • Collaborate with data engineering and analytics teams to build and refine COR data pipelines, validate data quality, and improve reporting accuracy

  • Develop scalable processes to support rapid growth in compute infrastructure spend while maintaining strong internal controls

  • Prepare variance analysis comparing actual COR to budget and forecast, investigating and explaining significant fluctuations

  • Support external audit requirements related to COR, cost allocations, and related accounting policies

  • Prepare management reports and supporting schedules for COR, gross margin, and cost allocation analysis

  • Work cross-functionally with Capital Efficiency, Infrastructure, and Product teams to understand compute cost drivers and improve allocation accuracy

You may be a good fit if you:

  • Have 8+ years of progressive accounting experience with meaningful exposure to cost accounting and Cost of Revenue

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA or equivalent preferred

  • Demonstrate experience with COR and COR allocation methodologies, including overhead and direct cost attribution

  • Have hands-on experience working with ERP allocation schedules and automated cost distribution

  • Show ability to scope and formulate accounting policies for allocating costs to COR

  • Are proficient in financial analysis and comfortable working with large datasets

  • Be familiar with gross margin analysis and unit economics

  • Have a builder mindset—comfortable creating processes from scratch in a fast-paced environment

  • Exhibit strong organizational skills and attention to detail

Strong candidates may also:

  • Have experience with NetSuite or Workday ERP systems

  • Possess SQL skills for querying and analyzing cost datasets

  • Understand compute infrastructure cost structures and cloud economics

  • Have experience at a technology company with consumption-based revenue models

  • Show genuine curiosity about AI technology and the infrastructure that supports it

  • Demonstrate proficiency with AI-assisted tools for enhancing financial analysis

  • Have experience with cross-charge or intercompany allocation processes

Deadline to apply: None. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Education requirements: We require at least a Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.

Location-based hybrid policy:
Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.

Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed.  Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.

How we're different

We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.

The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.
