Job Description:

The Provisional Fellow, Cardiothoracic Surgery position is apart of the cardiothoracic and transplant program at St Vincents Hospital Sydney, Darlinghurst. This unit supplies adult cardiothoracic surgical services for the South Eastern and Illawarra Region and also a statewide service for NSW, being an area of quaternary referral for complex cardiothoracic surgery. 

 

The unit also is the Heart and Lung Transplant Unit for NSW and, also services patients from interstate. St Vincents Hospital is a tertiary Hospital and the Cardiothoracic Unit and Transplant Program at St Vincents Hospital has a National and International reputation. 

The Provisional Fellow, Cardiothoracic Surgery, will be under level 3 supervision of Senior Medical staff and the position will involve: 

  • Independently performing simple to complex cardiac surgeries 

  • VATS and open lung procedures 

  • Involvement in all aspects of surgical management of heart/lung transplantation. 

  • Pre and post operative care of Cardiac and thoracic surgical patients. 

  • Attending pre and post operative clinics. 

  • Attend MDT meetings which discuss patients requiring thoracic organ transplantation, patients with complex coronary and valvular heart disease, decision making in various lung pathologies. 

  • Attending and presenting in mortality and morbidity meetings. 

  • Research and Quality improvement: 

  • Participation in the Department's research projects. 

  • Participation in the Quality improvement activities of the department 

The aim of this position is to enable the IMG to successfully complete 12 months of supervised practice with learning goals set by RACS and clear fellowship examinations during this period.
