Your Mission

As the Chief Compliance & Audit Officer, your mission is to establish mortgage compliance processes and procedures to ensure Unison Mortgage Corporation fully complies with applicable mortgage laws and regulations as we launch our mortgage division. You will represent Unison in investor meetings, regulatory inquiries, and outside third party audits. You will work closely with sales, operations, servicing and technology teams to ensure processes, procedures and technology perform compliantly as intended. You will also be responsible for developing a compliance playbook, internal testing, and regulatory audits. 

Within 1 month, you’ll: 

  • Learn about our established product, equity sharing agreement as well as the new mortgage product initiative
  • Immerse into the product development process with a focus on helping ensure perfect compliance for the launch
  • Review the existing compliance framework and make recommendations for improvement

Within 3 months, you’ll:

  • Have compliance playbook established
  • Review first wave of mortgage loans as they are consummated to ensure all compliance components met within specified timeframes
  • Establish relationships with department heads
  • Have started to formulate compliance testing plan
  • Established relationships with external compliance partners and vendors

Within 6 months, you’ll: 

  • Have successfully completed first internal compliance audit
  • Identified areas of concern, severity, and have formulated plans to rectify
  • Established calendar for periodic testing and review
  • Established testing plan for all involved vendors, with a focus on subservicing
  • Have completed first review of servicing vendors policies and procedures, internal testing plans, disaster recovery/business continuity plans, and audit results
  • Established employee compliance training initiatives

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure enterprise wide compliance through a sound compliance management system
  • Structure and Lead Compliance Committee and Compliance Policy Approval Committee
  • Develop, implement and maintain compliance policies and procedures
  • Assess current policies, procedures and practices to ensure compliance with laws and regulations and implement any needed changes
  • Identify and evaluate newly enacted laws and regulations that impact the business lines and execute a plan for compliance that will mitigate any risk
  • Communicate with various regulatory bodies
  • Oversee compliance testing, reporting and creation of Compliance Committee deck
  • Develop and provide input on training materials and may present or oversee compliance training
  • Review assessment reports related to annual lender, CMS, sub-servicer, and AML
  • Perform internal AML assessment
  • Provide direct leadership to compliance and audit management and staff ensuring activities run efficiently while providing development and coaching, including education and resources
  • Oversee branch compliance to ensure nationwide offices have compliance support, training and resources
  • Independence and authority to test, examine and audit compliance based on company policy and procedures, laws and regulations and to document recommended corrective action
  • Ensure two separate risk assessments of regulatory and fair lending
  • Compile monitoring and corrective action risk ratings
  • Maintain consistent policy and audit schedules
  • Ensure response to consumer complaints through regular audit
  • Oversee and review Fair Lending and HMDA activities and reporting
  • Oversee and review NMLS and state specific reporting
  • Oversee and review internal and external third party audits
  • Oversee and review Federal and State examinations
  • Oversee and review branch annual audits
  • Oversee and review internal audit policy testing
  • Oversee and review state disclosure and testing

About You 

You are a seasoned executive mortgage leader, experienced in shaping the compliance processes and policies for origination and servicing of non-conforming mortgages. You are creative and thrive in complex and uncertain environments and are ready to innovate the home financing space. You exemplify our values, have a drive to succeed, and your experience includes: 

  • 8 years minimum of core compliance and 10 – 15 years progressively responsible experience managing and/or evaluating mortgage and/or consumer lending, mortgage origination, and servicing loan portfolios
  • Mortgage banking managerial background which includes: Pipeline Management, Reporting, Risk Analysis, Operations Management (Processing, Underwriting, Closing, QA, Credit Risk Funding, Shipping, Insuring, Back-office, Marketing & Advertisement, Social Media and Secondary Marketing Compliance)
  • Working knowledge of the mortgage lending, underwriting, and servicing process including identification of exposure and risk factors, including fraud and AML
  • Excellent presentation and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in a self-directed manner, makes sound decisions and demonstrates superior organizational skills
  • Working knowledge of mortgage regulations including Regulation Z, TRID, ATR, Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA), AML, UDAAP, Appraisal Management, Vendor Management, NMLS Licensing and Reporting
  • Experience building compliance framework for a mortgage startup 
  • Working knowledge of investor guidelines, underwriting policies and loan products
  • Ability to set a clear vision and drive the team’s performance towards goal achievement
  • Proven track record in building strong relationships, influencing change and delivering results across an organization
  • Thrives in a fast paced environment needing to manage multiple priorities
  • Demonstrated leadership ability with proven success in building and managing teams
  • Demonstrated strategic and tactical planning skills
  • High-level communication skills: written – verbal – listening
  • Ability to interact with external regulators

  • Certified Mortgage Compliance Professional (CMCP) designation

What does Unison Offer?

The base salary range for this role is $185,000 to $220,000 and the job duties must be performed from our San Francisco, CA office. This range does not include bonus potential, equity, or additional benefits that the company may provide. The base salary offered will be determined by a wide array of factors such as experience, skills, certifications, and education. Decisions will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
