POSITION OVERVIEW
BDC aims to increase its impact on the Canadian economy by fueling the dreams of entrepreneurs through access to financial solutions and holistic support. Our renewed purpose "empower a nation of dreamers and doers to build a better tomorrow for all" elevates our role in the Canadian ecosystem. Central to this is the ambition to reach more entrepreneurs, including underrepresented and underserved, by leveraging lending partnerships. The Community Banking unit is a vehicle for this strategy, designing, testing and deploying transformative financing and non-financing solutions through meaningful relationships with external partners (B2B2C model).
Reporting to the Lead, Community Banking – Lending Solutions, the Senior Underwriter, Community Banking – Lending Solutions is responsible for conducting proper investigations and due diligence activities for partners indirect lending proposals. The individual must also present high-quality proposals, which include all appropriate analysis and documentation while ensuring that risk levels are within the parameters of accepted credit practices and BDC policies and procedures. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced underwriter to gain exposure to complex partnership transactions on a national level and collaborate with Financial Institutions and partners alike to have a positive and long impact on the Canadian economy.
CHALLENGES TO BE MET
Structure highly complex lending partnership agreements, envelopes of up to ~$400MM, by applying expert credit analysis, due diligence and sound account management practices to develop appropriate terms, pricing, conditions and covenants
Act as first line of defense in negotiation discussions with senior leaders of Financial Institutions and Partners to design and operationalize optimal risk solutions
Build risk mitigation strategies to support new & existing partnerships (~75 Partners Canada-Wide)
Liaise and build strong relationship with internal partners (IRM/Legal/CRM) to negotiate and structure partnership agreement while ensuring compliance with BDC policies and procedures.
Participate in the resolution of compliance or material changes that arise
Develop win-win-win solutions for the partner, client’s and BDC through innovative thinking and resourcefulness.
Keep abreast of changes to policies, procedures and detailed processes and trends in credit and regulatory issues that may have an impact on BDC.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Bachelor’s degree in commerce, business administration or accounting (Masters or MBA, an asset)
Accounting designation or CFA charter holder and banking experience are a definite asset
7-10 years or more of relevant experience in capital modeling, financial structuring or corporate finance
A passion for supporting underrepresented and underserved entrepreneurs
Experience in loan writing and ability to analyze and structure complex financial deals
Sound credit judgement coupled with a strong understanding of credit policies and practices
Ability to develop win-win solutions for the partner, the end-client and BDC through innovative thinking
Strong communication skills to be able to interact and negotiate with lending partners and, in certain instances
Good time management and priority setting skills to meet critical deadlines
Flexible and enjoys working in a dynamic and changing environment
Ability to work under pressure and deliver within tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Bilingualism (English and French), orally and written, is required
