Reuters, the world's leading global news agency, is a trusted provider of real-time news, data, photography, video, and information services to newspapers, television networks, radio stations, and digital publishers around the world. Our customers include the London Stock Exchange, established newspaper brands, television broadcasters, online media publishers, and digital platforms.

We are currently seeking a curious and empathic UX Lead with strong UX and UI skills, a demonstrable history of bringing design thinking and user interfaces and experience in managing small teams. The role sits within the product organization responsible for the content production and customer experience driving the world's most trusted news organization, Reuters News.

Your primary role will be to understand user needs and lead your team to build user-centred design workflows, prototypes, UI and associated deliverables for our assets across our product portfolio, focusing on key Content Production tools powering our global newsroom.

About the Role:

As our Lead User Experience Designer, you will:

  • Own the end-to-end design process - from initial planning to product design and polished visuals across your product area, with experience working across back-end internal tools.
  • Ensure that the products across the portfolio are optimised for the end user, while balancing the needs of internal content creators. Prioritising and recommending trade-offs based on user and business value.
  • Coach, mentor and actively assist in the career development of the designers on your direct team and occasionally mentor junior team members across the rest of the design organisation.
  • Work hand in hand with design leadership and other team members to remove roadblocks as needed, and inform decision-making across the rest of the team through ambiguity, ensuring decisions are grounded in data and UX best practices.
  • Manage project requirements and tasks across your product area, as well as delegate and prioritise workload for full-time and contract team members.
  • Partner with the Research, Product and Engineering teams to drive clarity in product needs by helping define missing use cases, user stories and influence the overall solution.
  • Articulate a compelling vision for customers across your product line.
  • Partner closely with the UX Research team to help identify iterative improvements across your product area.

In order to be successful in attaining these goals, you:

  • Have a global, growth-oriented mindset with significant experience designing, delivering, and iterating on world-class digital experiences.
  • Work best in a collaborative team environment, but can also tackle tasks independently, with potentially ambiguous briefs.
  • Are excited by the opportunity for continuous self-improvement through providing and receiving ongoing feedback with team members and stakeholders.
  • Seek out insights from both inside and outside the organization to help guide your work, serving as a credible and important voice for the users.
  • Address objections and concerns effectively and independently, while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Are able to confidently present and recommend trade-offs within the design team and to the design team leadership; communicate changes in delivery expectations and promote compromise when necessary.
  • Demonstrate a customer-focussed mindset, a passion for proactively taking action, and a drive to continually provide users with a valuable digital experience.

About you:

To be our Lead User Experience Designer, you will likely have:

  • 8+ years of product design experience, 2+ years in a lead role
  • Track record of managing designers
  • Nice to have: A Bachelor’s degree or higher in UX/HCI or related field, or significant equivalent experience.
  • A thorough understanding and working knowledge of UX & Accessibility best practices, UXR methods, service design and design systems.
  • Confident in facilitating UX and design thinking-led workshops for key stakeholders across the business.
  • Experience working with design systems, design tokens and atomic design principles
  • A robust portfolio of previous product design work that illustrates some hands-on work as well as work created as a team. Portfolio showcases a proven track record of solving complex design problems with design-led thinking that exhibits a clean, polished design aesthetic coupled with a passion for accessibility, consistency, and usability. Prior experience designing solutions for content editing platforms is a big bonus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and experience interfacing with a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Understand the importance of teamwork and can leave your ego at the door.
  • A willingness to grow with the role and make it your own.
  • Comfortable working in a complex and dynamic environment, juggling multiple priorities, and interacting with people at all levels of the organization and across multiple functions.
