The Technology Infrastructure Engineering and Operations Team engineers and supports all the foundational technology used across M&T Bank.  We support two Data Centers, 15,000 Distributed platforms, 24 Mainframe Regions, a secure and reliable Network connecting all the technology across the bank footprint and process approximately 635,000 automated jobs per month.  In addition to that foundational technology level, we own the operational support processes, monitoring and command center that provide a unified, well-managed technology response when issues arise.    We deliver innovative, and compelling technology solutions, in partnership with our line of business CIOs, to enhance the internal customer experience that enables our business partners to deliver.

Overview: We are currently seeking a talented System Programmer to join our dynamic z/OS support team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of z/OS systems, along with expertise in various system components. Additionally, the candidate should possess deep SMP/E experience, proficiency in capacity planning, and a solid understanding of disaster recovery testing methodologies.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Installation, maintenance, support and troubleshooting of z/OS systems and program products (via SMP/E and z/OSMF)
  • Complete maintenance activity, including patching, health checks, operating system updates, validation of changes, and maintenance of operational and configuration standards following standard operating procedures.
  • Support capacity planning and development of long-term strategic goals for systems and software in conjunction with Engineering and Architecture. Participate with management to present recommendations to senior management.
  • Support disaster recovery testing and validation in accordance with business continuity standards.
  • Create and maintain standard operating procedure documentation.
  • Participate in 24/7 On-call rotation and provide after hour support as required for project implementations or responding to incidents.
  • Use tools to help automate processes and make systems more efficient, manageable, available, and secure.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior associates.
  • Support of system shutdown and load (IPL)
  • Serve as lead architect with project work in cross-functional teams.
  • Provide expert problem-solving of technical incidents based on mastery of system and adjoining systems.
  • Research new and existing technologies to deliver best of breed technology to keep the Bank current and competitive in the market.
  • Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Combined minimum of 9 years’ higher education and/or related work experience
  • Solid understanding of z/OS installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting processes
  • Proficiency with major subsystems (JES2, XCF, etc.)
  • Deep SMP/E experience, with a focus on efficient system management
  • Capacity planning and disaster recovery testing experience
  • Proficiency in Rexx Scripting and Python for automation and scripting tasks
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
  • Interest in exploring new technologies spanning ISPF/TSO to GUI and modern applications

Education and Experience Preferred:

  • Familiarity with GDPS and ACF2
  • Proficiency in HMC operations, HCD configuration
  • Experience with IBM and ISV billing methodologies
  • Experience with Scrum and Agile methodologies
  • Combined minimum of 15 years’ higher education and/or related work experience
  • Certifications or special training in Related Technologies
