Position Summary
The Manager of Financial Reporting – U.S. GAAP Accounting manages and reviews accounting close procedures, applies accounting policies, presents financial results to senior management, prepares/reviews all quarterly and annual financial reports and schedules in accordance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (“GAAP”), prepares and/or reviews disclosure checklists and performs technical research and analysis. Also critical to the success of this role is active management and intentional engagement with the accounting staff so as to promote a culture of continuous professional growth and development (with a fundamental focus on succession planning).
Responsibilities
Responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of the monthly GAAP basis close process, which includes journal entry processes and full preparation of financial reports in accordance with GAAP guidelines.
Manages the maintenance of highly detailed allocation schedules used on a GAAP reporting basis.
Responsible for the completion of all balance sheet account reconciliations in a timely manner.
Manage the teams internal/external audit process so that it may be completed effectively/efficiently.
Prepares and researches variance analysis on a monthly/quarterly basis and presents results to senior management.
Stays current on all applicable GAAP accounting pronouncements and updates, procedures, practices, and rules (e.g., GAAP, FASB, SEC). Informs Finance senior management of new requirements that could potentially impact the organization from a compliance or resource perspective.
Coordinates implementation of new regulations or accounting and reporting requirements. Ensures GAAP processes are aligned to internal control framework requirements in addition to Sarbanes-Oxley compliance over the financial statements.
Develops and refines business requirements, processes, and applications (e.g., Workday Financials) to increase efficiency.
Regularly interfaces with Actuarial, FP&A and Treasury to ensure all transactions occurring during the month are properly recorded.
Manage, train and mentor financial reporting accounting staff and lead others through change as roles/responsibilities adapt to changing demands.
Works closely with the Statutory Accounting and Reinsurance Accounting groups to ensure all related schedules for the quarterly and annual statement filings are complete and accurate.
Oversees maintenance of highly detailed schedules of manually tracked investments used in Statutory and Tax basis reporting.
Presents monthly results to senior management related to the Company’s contract underwriting business, while managing the accounting, reporting and audit requirements.
Oversees OneStream integration/refinement during global mortgage insurance close processes.
Knowledge and Skills
In depth knowledge of accounting theory and GAAP as it relates to the financial services industry.
Solid understanding of month-end closes process and account analysis.
Advanced knowledge of ERP financial applications, such as Workday.
Skilled in identifying and resolving complex accounting issues.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Strong time management and organizational skills with the ability to consistently meet deadlines.
Strong analytical skills.
Ability to effectively lead and motivate others within the department.
Education & Experience
Required knowledge and skills would typically be acquired through a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related fields and CPA and 5+ years related experience.
