POSITION SUMMARY

  • Lead an engineering project team in the product development process for mechanical hardware of 4WD/AWD, coupling, and clutch module products in customer applications. This includes the development of the initial proposal based on known customer requirements, responsibility for the development and design of the product at each prototype phase, the validation of the product at prototype and production phase, and post-launch support.

ORGANIZATIONAL POSITION

  • The Applications Engineer – Mechanical (PEM) reports to the Manager of Applications Engineering - Mechanical. The PEM typically does not have direct reports, however, they are technically responsible for leading an engineering project team through the product development process. This includes individuals responsible for CAD, component design, CAE, prototype build, and validation. The position also involves interaction with individuals responsible for program timing, financials, manufacturing, electrical hardware and software, and quality. The PEM will also interact with external teams and individuals, such as customers and suppliers, as required.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • The Applications Engineer – Mechanical is the engineering responsible lead for the validated design of the electro-mechanical 4WD/AWD, coupling, or clutch module sub-system and its components. They are the Engineering Bill of Material owner and lead for the engineering activities associated with the product development process from new business opportunity through production launch. This includes:

  • Developing proposals for the mechanical hardware and supporting the estimation process for new business opportunities.

  • Conducting and leading meetings for design, build, open issues, problem-solving, and other subjects, as necessary.

  • Providing design direction and issuing requests for drawings, product specification, FEA analysis, and component design and analysis along with reviewing and approving outputs from said requests.

  • Developing technical documentation and engineering specifications for the product assembly and sub-assemblies along with creating sub-system requirements definitions.

  • Supporting the prototype build process by working with purchasing to obtain parts, creating control plans, coordinating builds and tests, reviewing and approving incoming components, and signing off hardware for usage in internal and external testing.

  • Performing mechanical hardware system level design calculations.

  • Leading a team in the creation and maintenance of mechanical hardware assembly/system level DFMEAs.

  • Leading an engineering team in problem solving for root cause investigation and solution creation.

  • Escalating and reporting status of key mechanical issues to management.

  • Leading and/or supporting the enginProvide engineering support for the product. This includes:

    • Supporting the ECU, software and calibration engineers to ensure the integration of mechanical and electrical systems.

    • Support creation and tracking of project engineering timing plan per PDP and/or for specific issues requiring specific engineering timing plans

    • Supporting validation engineers in preparing the appropriate fixtures and completing testing requirements.  Support to develop and monitor the ADVP&R's.

    • Supporting resident engineers in the analysis of customer requirements to ensure the product meets performance, packaging and serviceability requirements, and in the resolution of open issues.

    • Supporting sales with engineering data for estimates, including cost reduction opportunities, with technical data for customer interaction, and for customer prototype builds.

    • Supporting program management and technical management with details and timing of required engineering tasks needed to develop the product.

    • Supporting the production operations in DFM/DFA activities, alignment with the assembly specification, and technical resource for the product throughout its life cycle.

    • Supporting global supply chain organization as a technical resource for sourcing decisions and technical discussions.

    • Supporting engineering organization with continuous improvement initiative as a team member and/or champion.
