Do work that matters

We’re building tomorrow’s bank today. That means creating digital experiences that are faster, smarter, more resilient, and more intuitive for our customers and bankers.

As a Principal Software Engineer in the Digital Sales Excellence Crew, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the platforms and experiences used by our Institutional bankers and customers. You will lead agentic SDLC practices in the crew championing what the future of engineering will look like. You’ll bring deep technical expertise, strategic thinking, and engineering leadership to help teams deliver high-quality digital products safely and at scale.

You will help modernise key platforms, uplift engineering practices, and shape the next generation of AI-powered and agentic experiences across Institutional Banking.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the technical direction for modern full-stack digital platforms

  • Architect scalable, secure and resilient systems across frontend, BFF, API and backend layers

  • Guide teams through complex engineering challenges and help turn ambiguity into clear technical direction

  • Champion engineering excellence, including quality, security, observability, automation and continuous delivery

  • Partner with product, risk, architecture and business stakeholders to deliver meaningful outcomes

  • Mentor senior engineers and contribute to a high-performing, inclusive engineering culture

Together, we will craft world-class digital solutions that improve how our bankers engage with customers and how our customers experience the bank.

See yourself in our team

Institutional Banking Technology is pushing the boundaries of modern engineering, building resilient digital experiences powered by cloud-native platforms, modern application architecture and AI-enabled engineering practices.

Reporting to the Crew Tech Lead, Digital Sales Excellence, you will join a team focused on improving banker productivity, customer engagement and digital sales outcomes across Institutional Banking.

We have an exciting roadmap ahead, including the modernisation of two strategic platforms and the delivery of AI-powered, agentic experiences for both bankers and customers.

You will work in a full-stack, full-cycle delivery model, where engineers take ownership from concept through to production. Our technology landscape includes:

  • Next.js, React and TypeScript

  • Node.js BFF services

  • REST and GraphQL APIs

  • Java and Python services

  • Cloud-native platforms

  • CI/CD, automated testing and DevSecOps practices

  • AI-enabled engineering tools and patterns

This is a hands-on technical leadership role for someone who enjoys setting direction, solving hard problems, and helping teams deliver safely in a complex, regulated environment.

We’re interested in hearing from people who have

  • Extensive experience in senior engineering or technical leadership roles

  • Deep expertise in full-stack engineering for modern digital products

  • A strong track record designing and delivering large-scale distributed systems

  • The ability to translate business, risk and technology needs into clear engineering strategy

  • Proven experience delivering in regulated, enterprise-scale environments

  • Strong stakeholder influence and communication skills

  • The ability to work through ambiguity and make pragmatic, well-reasoned decisions

  • A passion for building high-performing, inclusive engineering cultures

  • Passion to drive agentic SDLC and curiosity and ambition around how AI can transform engineering, delivery and customer experiences

Technical skills

We do not expect you to know everything, but experience across several of the following areas will set you up for success.

  • Software engineering experience: 15+ years of relevant hands-on experience in software development, with strong depth across architecture, design and delivery.

  • Technical leadership: Ability to set engineering direction, influence architecture, mentor engineers, and drive engineering excellence across teams.

  • Full-stack engineering: Deep experience delivering end-to-end solutions using Next.js, React, TypeScript and modern frontend engineering practices.

  • Distributed systems: Strong understanding of large-scale system design, integration patterns, resilience, reliability and performance.

  • Cloud and infrastructure: Experience with AWS, containerisation, Docker, Kubernetes, configuration management and cloud-native service design.

  • DevOps and CI/CD: Practical experience with tools such as GitHub Actions, TeamCity, Octopus, Snyk and automated testing frameworks.

  • Quality engineering: Ability to champion clean code, automated testing, regression discipline, release confidence and maintainable engineering practices.

  • Security and observability: Strong understanding of secure coding, application security, monitoring, logging, tracing and operational excellence.
