This is a 12-bed unit, that is housed in the penthouse/8th floor of the North Tower of the adult OU Health facility near downtown, Oklahoma City. We are a part of the Cardiovascular institute of OU Health, and are recognized by our royal blue color scrubs on campus.
Our unit focuses on intensive care for adult patients with cardiac, thoracic, and vascular diseases and or requiring surgeries related to these categories. Patient to nursing staff ratio is 2:1, or 1:1 for higher acuity patients. Our unit is considered the only center in Oklahoma that reports thoracic surgery data to the Society of Thoracic Surgery (STS). Focused patient care areas include post-operative cardiac surgery (minimally invasive and open coronary bypass graft, aortic root repair or replacement, Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), among others. Post-operative thoracic surgery populations cared for include esophagectomies, paraesophageal hernia repairs, fundoplications, video and or robot-assisted thoracotomies, lobectomies, and pneumonectomies, etc. Post-operative vascular surgeries include minimally invasive thoracic and abdominal endovascular aortic repairs (TeVAR/EVAR), bypass grafting of major arterial vessels (Fem-pop, pop-pop), peripheral artery stents, etc.
Our unit also provides care for cardiac medicine, thoracic, and vascular medicine patients with conditions like Heart failure exacerbation, shock, MI, cold legs, esophageal ruptures, status-post arrest, multi-organ failure, etc. Machine focus includes, but not limited to IABP, Impella, CRRT, EKOS, ECMO, and ventilators.
We share the 8th floor with our sister cardiovascular/thoracic units with a step-down and telemetry patients, allowing for quick and lateral unit transfers.

Education: Graduation from an approved school of nursing.
Experience: N/A
Licensure/Certifications/Registrations Required: Possession of a valid temporary license or permanent license issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse prior to entrance on duty. Permanent license must be obtained within 3 months of appointment. BLS certification required upon hire. Additional certification(s) may be required based on department, see attachment for details.

Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, techniques and procedures. Ability to organize, plan, coordinate and evaluate nursing services and apply nursing techniques. Ability to maintain good working relationships with other employees. Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to respond effectively to cultural and language needs of patients and visitors. Some computer skills.
