Job Description

What is the Opportunity?

This is an opportunity to shape investment operational risk practices in a dynamic wealth management environment, directly impacting business strategy while collaborating with top-tier professionals. If you’re passionate about investment integrity, risk excellence, and strategic risk advisory, this role is for you.

This role is pivotal in delivering best-in-class operational risk management for our Investments business within Wealth Management Europe (WME), ensuring robust oversight of investment-related risks to support sound decision-making. As a key partner to the business, you’ll leverage RBC’s risk management framework to provide actionable insights, enhance controls, and drive compliance across investment products, portfolio management, and trade flows.

Collaborating with stakeholders and the broader risk team, you’ll focus on investment-specific operational risk domains, including risk and control assessments (RCSA), regulatory compliance (e.g., MiFID II), risk appetite calibration, and thematic analysis of investment processes.

This role can be based in London, Newcastle, Edinburgh, or Jersey.

RBC’s expectation is that all employees and contractors will work in the office with some flexibility to work up to 1 day per week remotely, depending on working arrangements.

What Will You Do?

  • Lead Investment Risk Advisory: Partner with WME senior leaders to embed RBC’s risk standards into investment processes, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements (e.g., MiFID II) and industry best practices.
  • Risk Event & Issue Management: Identify, analyze, and resolve investment-related operational risks (e.g., trade errors, portfolio breaches, or regulatory gaps), articulating root causes and remediation steps.
  • Control Environment Oversight: Drive the annual RCSA process for investment functions, validating risks, controls, and control gaps in areas like portfolio construction, trading, and client onboarding.
  • Risk Appetite & Reporting: Contribute to the WME Risk Appetite framework, developing metrics to monitor investment risks (e.g., concentration, liquidity, market risk). Support quarterly risk reporting, KRI tracking, and deep dives into investment-specific themes.
  • Change & Regulatory Compliance: Assess risks in new investment products/processes, ensuring controls mitigate gaps and comply with regulations. Update risk profiles for changes in trade flows or regulatory landscapes.
  • Continuous Improvement: Proactively identify opportunities to enhance investment risk processes, leveraging industry benchmarks and RBC’s global frameworks.
  • Stakeholder Influence: Drive a standardized, efficient approach to investment risk management, prioritizing consistency and reusability across WME.

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

  • Deep Investment Expertise: Strong knowledge of investment products, portfolio management, trade flows, and regulations (e.g., MiFID II, UCITS, PRIIPs).
  • Risk Management Experience: Proven track record in investment or operational risk, including RCSA, risk reporting, issue management, and control frameworks.
  • Regulatory Acumen: Understanding of wealth management regulations and their impact on investment processes.
  • Leadership & Collaboration: Ability to manage a team, influence stakeholders, and partner with 2LoD/3LoD functions.
  • Analytical & Communication Skills: Talent for framing complex investment risks into actionable insights and storytelling through data.
  • Qualifications: Degree in finance/economics or equivalent; certifications like CFA, CISI, or FRM are advantageous.

Nice to have

  • Experience with wealth management platforms (e.g., Charles River, BlackRock Aladdin).
  • Familiarity with risk frameworks.
  • Certifications in risk (e.g., IRM) or compliance (e.g., ICA).
