Job Summary:

Performs routine to highly complex medical laboratory tests in different areas of the lab. Responsible for one or more technical work areas including: oversight as a key operators, regulatory compliance, new method project plans, technical communications, and cost-effective inventory control. May be the document owner of technical procedures, forms, misc. documents, method validation, and implementation. Trains students and new employees, coordinates preceptor activity, participates in system competency development, and provides the direct observation of staff for the annual competency program. Functions as the site lab liaison to the system's Technical Specialist and serves as Charge Tech in the absence of Supervisor/Manager.

Job Description:

Principle Responsibilities

  • Performs routine to highly complex laboratory procedures.
    • Performs analytical and waived tests according to policy and procedures and federal regulations including CAP, OSHA, COLA, CLIA, and HIPAA.
    • Evaluates results for accuracy, and resolves complex test problems.
    • Recognizes, communicates, and documents results that require action.
    • Performs and documents routine & advanced instrument maintenance, and quality control; takes appropriate remedial action, and ensures appropriate record retention.
    • Maintains oversight as the key site technical resource of one or more work areas.
    • Oversees proficiency testing for assigned department.
    • Coordinates and assists in the development of required competencies, including timely direct observation of staff.
  • Maintain safety, education, and competency requirements.
    • Participates in the training of employees and students.
    • Manages proficiency testing assignments and submission.
    • Performs and coordinates Direct Observations of staff for annual competency program.
  • Collection and processing of specimens.
    • Instructs patients on procedures and protocols.
    • Verifies correct patient identification.
    • Identifies and uses appropriate collection method to obtain samples for testing (venipuncture or capillary puncture).
    • Collects sample, and labels specimens.
  • Customer service and patient order management.
    • Greets patients, performs check-in process, and responds to patient's questions and needs.
    • Evaluates patient orders for completeness and follows up as needed.
    • Performs scheduling, ordering and releasing of patient orders in the electronic medical record.
  • Administrative duties.
    • Stocks, rotates and requests supplies on a regular basis.
    • Participates in departmental or system wide meetings, projects or committees as required.
    • Performs various clerical duties.
    • May assist with department scheduling.
  • CLIA defined responsibilities:
    • § 493.1425 Standard; Testing personnel responsibilities. Moderate complexity.
    • § 493.1495 Standard; Testing personnel responsibilities.
    • Other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related laboratory field including clinical rotations or equivalent routes as specified in CLIA ‘88 required and
  • 3 to 7 years experience in high complexity laboratory required and
  • 7+ years experience preferred
  • Possess or is eligible to receive appropriate HHS approved laboratory certification (ASCP or AMT). If not certified, must obtain certification within 180 Days required
