Your Opportunity

Your Compensation: $21.10 hourly

Learns, demonstrates knowledge and skills, and becomes certified in all aspects of Smithfield Grain and pork industry standards. Learns to direct and coordinate activities at elevator including profitability, customer service, grain origination, and merchandising. This position functions under the supervision of the appropriate department leader while performing all duties and responsibilities as a learning/development process.

Core Responsibilities

  • Learns to aggressively originate grain from local farmers by building relationships and offering exceptional customer service which includes minimizing arriving truck waiting time to the greatest extent possible.

  • Learns to inspect, grade, and weigh products to verify conformance to specifications and directs setup and adjustments of storage use, drier operation, blending capacity, and oversees quality control and assurance.

  • Records and communicates cash and contract grain purchases and risk position to Smithfield Grain.

  • Measures, monitors, and manages inventory in order to objectively report and to minimize inventory shrink.

  • Studies production schedules and estimates worker hour requirements for completion of job assignments.

  • Learns to establish and/or adjust work procedures to meet production schedules.

  • Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product.

  • Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of elevator and/or work crew.

  • Analyzes and helps to resolve work problems or assists workers in solving work problems.

  • Learns how to maintain time and production records.

  • Estimates, requisitions, and inspects materials and facility for preventative maintenance.

  • Performs activities of workers supervised.

  • Responsible for being in compliance with all environmental laws and procedures to which Smithfield Hog Production Division subscribes.

  • Learns, demonstrates capability/knowledge and becomes certified in all Smithfield Grain department areas including fulfilling all the requirements and responsibilities listed under the Grain Elevator Operator job description.

  • Gains a solid understanding of and ability to implement company systems such as receiving, batching, and load out etc.

  • Performs and masters all hourly jobs under supervision. Becomes certified in each job after showing competence and skill/understanding in each.

  • Develops and establishes rapport/relationships with all personnel and management.

  • Develops employee management skills. Gains experience in leadership process and challenges.

  • Develops and prepares required reports on experience encountered and addresses/shares opportunities for improvement.

  • Maintains an active license to operate forklift, certified weigh master, and grading grain.

  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as defined by management according to standards.

  • Report all environmental issues immediately to their supervisor.

  • Read and understand the company’s emergency notification process and will be responsible for reviewing that policy at their work site.

  • Follow company IPS policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year accredited college or university in Feed Mill Science/Agricultural Engineering/Animal Science or related field of study, or currently enrolled college student with an anticipated graduation by end of current semester; or equivalent combination of education and experience, required.

  • Organizational skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Computer skills.

  • Valid state driver’s license and acceptable MVR.

  • Weekend, evening, and holiday work required as needed. Availability to work extended weekday and weekend hours during harvest season.

  • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.

  • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.
