Systems Engineer (Mid-Level or Senior) - (Cold Soak & ETOPS)

Company:

The Boeing Company

Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA) is seeking a Systems Engineer (Mid-Level or Senior) to join the Cold Soak & ETOPS organization based in Everett, Washington. This requisition will be used to hire engineers for two separate but related teams: the Cold Soak Team and the ETOPS (Extended Operations) Team. Successful candidates will support one or both teams depending on program needs and individual skills.

Develop and implement systems engineering solutions addressing cold-soak mandates and ETOPS certification and readiness. Work includes requirements, verification & validation, testing, certification deliverables, and procedures that ensure safety and regulatory compliance (FAA and foreign authorities).

This role requires collaboration across disciplines (propulsion, systems, avionics, structures, maintenance/operations), strong systems engineering fundamentals, and the ability to operate in ambiguous, dynamic program environments.

Primary Responsibilities (Cold Soak):

  • Conduct systems engineering activities to evaluate aircraft systems for cold soak conditions and impacts.

  • Perform requirements definition, validation, and verification specific to cold weather/cold soak scenarios.

  • Support Flight Test and Ground Test planning and execution that address cold soak effects (test procedures, data analysis, configuration control, conformity).

  • Ensure Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICA) include appropriate cold weather procedures and operational guidance.

  • Review safety assessments and ensure compliance with FAA regulations (including review relevant regs such as 14 CFR 25.1527 where applicable to cold soak).

  • Contribute to continuous improvement of solution sets across development programs and derivatives related to cold-soak mitigation.

Primary Responsibilities (ETOPS):

  • Support ETOPS certification and readiness activities to ensure aircraft are designed, tested, and supported for extended operations (including overwater long-range missions).

  • Participate in development and execution of ETOPS plans, health initiatives, corrective action plans, and system-level responsibilities that impact ETOPS certification.

  • Develop and implement training, guidance, process checklists, and standard feedback loops for ETOPS-significant systems to improve consistency and quality of certification deliverables.

  • Coordinate with system teams and regulatory agencies (FAA and foreign authorities) to resolve technical and procedural ETOPS issues and to support certification submittals.

  • Support function & reliability (F&R) activities to ensure reliability targets at Entry-Into-Service and ongoing ETOPS readiness.

Shared Responsibilities (applicable to both teams):

  • Collaborate with Boeing engineers, certification specialists, and external stakeholders to ensure program certification and regulatory submissions.

  • Prepare and review certification artifacts, Issue Papers/Coordination Memos, Certification Plans, and technical reports.

  • Communicate technical rationale clearly in both verbal and written form; lead or support program reviews and regulatory meetings as needed.

  • Contribute to cross-program lessons learned and system-level risk mitigation strategies.

Basic Qualifications (Required):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (including manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.

  • 4+ years of related work experience in systems engineering or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired):

  • Level 4: 7+ years of related work experience in systems engineering or a related field.

  • 5+ years in Aerospace with ETOPS or certification experience preferred; project leadership experience is a plus.

  • Regulatory/Certification Experience handling FAA and foreign regulatory interactions, Certification Plans, Issue Papers/Coordination Memos.

  • Experience applying Systems Engineering principles and Systems Integration in the aerospace industry.

  • Knowledge of cold soak conditions and their impact on aircraft systems, and/or demonstrated ETOPS technical experience (airplane readiness, procedure development, reliability/F&R).

  • Experience with flight test and ground test processes, test procedures, and data analysis.

  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills in English and ability to engage with regulators and cross-functional teams.
