Applied Mathematician, AR Waveguide Design

The simulation, optimization, and fabrication of diffractive AR combiners is a phenomenally complex problem for what is ultimately just a passive optical element. Applied Materials’ Photonics Platforms Business has taken on this challenge and emerged as an industry leader in the production of high-performance AR optics.

We are seeking a full-time applied mathematician to enhance our fundamental simulation and optimization infrastructure for augmented reality waveguide combiners. Our capabilities are built on a strong backbone of photonics expertise, and we are looking to bring in new talent with experience constructing complex mathematical frameworks that yield efficient algorithms. An ideal candidate will have a passion for utilizing mathematical methods to both capture complex real-world phenomena and produce high-quality optimized designs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Apply a combination of novel algorithm development and machine learning techniques to enhance the speed, accuracy, and scope of diffractive combiner models
  • Explore optimization schemes to improve the quality and speed of convergence in an exceptionally non-convex space with thousands of degrees of freedom
  • Make fundamental advances in how we approach new design discovery
  • Ensure that the combination of compute methods and compute hardware are optimal for the problems being solved

Key Qualifications

  • MS or PhD in applied mathematics, applied physics or similar discipline related to the below qualifications
  • Proficiency in MATLAB and C++
  • Proficiency in a variety of Machine Learning, Optimization and Control algorithms
  • Familiarity with highly parallelized cluster computing
  • Familiarity with physics-informed neural networks
  • Effective in communication of advantages, disadvantages, accuracy and risks of different algorithms, modeling approximations, and technical decisions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in optics and electromagnetics
  • Experience in hardware design
