About Marshmallow

We started Marshmallow when we found out how unfair insurance prices are for people who move to the UK. All because the industry hasn’t given this huge cohort of people a second’s thought, and isn’t set up to price them properly.

We saw an opportunity to do things differently, so we made it our mission to back the ones who step outside the norm. Since we started, we’ve helped 100,000s of people get a fairer deal on their car insurance. Using technology, we serve people that are often overlooked by financial services companies, solving important problems for people who need it most.

We know there are millions of marginalised customers out there. And we know that they face unique problems that most companies aren’t even aware of. We believe that our future is helping these people by learning about their experiences, and building our company around their needs. And there are strong signs that there’s a need for a company like us. Earlier this year we hit profitability, which is a huge milestone, but the most exciting thing is that we’re only just getting started.

How we work

We’re really proud of the culture we’ve created. We push for progress every day, because we know that we’ll only hit big milestones by taking lots of smaller steps. We’re always open to helping our team mates, sharing our ideas, experience and knowledge to solve problems together. We take risks, think creatively and experiment relentlessly to meet our customer’s needs, and never pass blame when things go wrong. We encourage people at all levels to take ownership of their work, and to be bold in challenging how we do things. Everyone has a voice and the opportunity to make an impact.

And autonomy and ownership are only possible with clear direction. That’s why we collaborate to do in-depth planning twice a year, and make sure we leave with clear goals and objectives that flow from top to bottom. To make sure we’re as aligned as possible across functions, most of our work rolls up into four tribes; Acquisition, Retention, Claims and Pricing, Underwriting & Fraud. Each tribe has multiple teams embedded in it, working cross-functionally to do great work.

We’re so excited for all of the challenges up ahead, and we need more people to help us tackle them! If life at Marshmallow sounds like it could be for you, explore our culture handbook or read our blog to find out more.

At Marshmallow, we work to revolutionise the insurance industry – it's not just about rethinking how people buy cover or make a claim. We want to reduce the distress caused by accidents and personal disasters - and one day remove it altogether! So, where do you come into that?

As a team of designers, writers and researchers, we identify the needs of our customers to make sure we're prioritising and building the right thing that supports people in their hour of need, and makes them safer in the first place. We work collaboratively across the company, breaking silos to create a seamless experience.

We're looking for a Senior Product Designer with experience in the Growth & Acquisition domain who can help us grow our customer base by easily balancing commercial thinking with detail orientated interaction design. This role is within the Acquisition space which is responsible for growing Marshmallow’s customer base by targeting customers with the right product, pricing and checks. This part of the business encompasses Marketing and Growth and also collaborates heavily with Fraud.

What you’ll be doing

  • Experimenting relentlessly. You’ll be embedded in a team that are running new experiments every single week. You’ll be thinking about the small and big wins that will drive conversion and experience improvements.

  • Understanding the needs of our customers. You’ll deeply understand customer needs and will strive to understand the what, why, and how of the problems you’re solving. You’ll use an evidence-based approach to product development while balancing business and customer needs.

  • Validating product and design decisions. Working with data and research you'll ensure your work is validated to reduce backtracking and enable the team to move quickly. You'll work with measures in place to make sure we're moving the needle on business and customers needs. And, you’re comfortable reviewing data to know how to iterate next.

  • Improving Marshmallow.com by collaborating with marketing and defining the architecture and templates to ensure the site is scalable and usable for our growing customer base.

  • Implementing high-quality, clear designs. Using design principles, industry knowledge and best practices you’ll make rational decisions that helps our customers when they interact with Marshmallow.

  • Collaborating to drive the product vision forward with business stakeholders, product managers, marketing, designers, and engineers to create alignment across teams and manage expectations.

You should apply if

  • You are customer-obsessed. You are passionate about gaining a deep understanding of our customer's needs and behaviours. You can easily communicate them to the wider business.

  • You can comfortably prioritise work using an evidence-based approach to product development. You balance business and users' needs, focusing on work that will bring the biggest benefits to the team.

  • You have an experimental mindset. You know that small changes can end in big results. You are comfortable at running quick experiments enabling your team to learn and iterate effectively.

  • You have a healthy split between UX & UI. Working across the whole funnel from landing pages to app you’ll need to be adept in balancing interaction design with strong visual skills and use of brand.

  • You have a high tolerance for ambiguity and are proactive at identifying opportunities and actively look at how to unblock and drive your team forward.

This isn't for you if

  • You like working on discrete problems. The projects at Marshmallow often cross over into different platforms and teams. You'll need to be comfortable at working collaboratively and drawing alignment in both your team and across teams.

  • You need top-down direction. We work autonomously within our squads to align and drive forward the direction of our products. You will need to be able to hold your own as the sole designer within your squad.

  • You stop once your work has been released. We're looking for someone who wants to release, track and continuously improve their work, learning from our customers how to make it better.
