Safety Technician - Environmental Health & Safety

Job Summary:

To provide basic to routine technical assistance in the establishment and enforcement of environmental and occupational rules and regulations. To inspect and maintain safety equipment.

Education & Experience

Associate's Degree in Engineering, Laboratory Science, or related field or equivalent combination of education/experience.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required: HAZWOPER certification required within one year of hire.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of chemical, biological, and radiation safety procedures, standards, and protocols. Knowledge of safety equipment, fire suppression, fire extinguishers, and smoke detection systems. Verbal and written communication skills. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications. Ability to gather and input data, prepare reports, and maintain detailed records. Ability to react calmly in emergency situations. Ability to work in/around potentially hazardous biological, chemical, or radiological conditions and to wear appropriate personal protective equipment. Ability to comply and enforce federal, state, and local safety regulations, protocols, and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains accurate documentation for accreditation requirements.
  • Serves as a member of the UMMC fire response team.
  • Conducts hands-on fire safety equipment training.
  • Performs basic to routine safety surveys and conducts investigations of laboratories and clinics to provide safety services and assure safety of employees, students, and the public.
  • Inspects and maintains university fire extinguishers and related safety equipment.
  • Participates in the inspection, maintenance, and testing of automatic and/or manual fire alarm and suppression systems.
  • Assists in the collection and disposal of hazardous waste to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Recommends the purchase of additional fire protection and safety equipment.
  • Inputs data and maintains records and files of surveys, inspections, and tests.

Physical and Environmental Demands
Requires frequent exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, constant handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, constant exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional travelling to offsite locations, frequent activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, occasional work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, constant bending, occasional lifting and carrying more than 100 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, occasional crouching/stooping, constant driving, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, frequent sitting, frequent standing, frequent twisting, and frequent walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
