KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Reviews complex/specialty patient medical records for inpatient accounts. At times may assist with other patient type reviews also
Assigns ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and ICD-10-PCS procedure codes, when applicable, to all accounts including complex and specialty cases, and sequences as outlined in the ICD Official Coding Guidelines, Uniform Hospital Discharge Data Set (UHDDS), and other regulatory requirements.
Communicates with providers and other clinical team members to obtain additional information, documentation specificity, completion, and diagnoses needed to accurately complete coding. Educates providers as needed regarding documentation improvement opportunities.
Manages work queues to ensure timely coding completion.
Assists with coder education, audit/denial work, and quality reviews.
Mentors and trains coding team members.
Serves as coding subject matter expert for other team members at ThedaCare and attends related meetings.
Follows up on charge related issues.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or GED preferred
Must be 18 years of age
Three years of experience in hospital coding
Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of twenty-five (25) pounds without assistance
Job classification is not exposed to blood borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Normally works in climate controlled office environment
Frequent sitting with movement throughout office space
Use of computers throughout the work day
Frequent use of keyboard with repetitive motion of hands, wrists, and fingers
