Packaging Engineer – Value Engineering

Global capability center seeks to hire Packaging Engineer. As a member of the Value Engineering Department, he/she will work with engineers/managers globally on packaging concepts, design, and productivity projects focused on ensuring product integrity and appeal under varying shipping and display conditions at optimal cost. The packaging Engineer works across functions and businesses that may include packaging design, material alternatives, reverse engineering teardown & benchmarking and preparing efficient packing procedures with co-ordination of procurement, sourcing, and manufacturing team to ensure timely completion of the projects.

Essential Duties/Principal Responsibilities:                        

  • Evaluate, plan, and execute activities related to design and development of protective packaging for Xylem products worldwide.
  • Conduct value engineering and cost analysis of new or proposed changes to packaging.
  • Prepare, update & release new & existing packaging drawings & packing instruction sheet using CAD tools.
  • Analyze product manufacturing, inventory, and channel requirements and make recommendations on packing design related to safety, sustainability, protection, and cost.
  • Make recommendations on facilities, equipment, materials, and personnel to improve efficiency of operations.
  • Work cross-functionally with procurement, sourcing, and manufacturing to determine costs and feasibility of producing proposed packaging and/or packing changes.
  • Recommend methods for improving production efficiency and reducing waste of materials and utilities.
  • Assist in production problem solving as it relates to the functionality of current or new packaging.
  • Advise on efficient packing procedures, marketplace trends, innovations in packaging materials, and utilization of sealing and fastening devices.
  • Work with existing packaging suppliers to improve product packaging.
  • Knowledge of Packaging Standards such as ASTM, ISTA etc.
  • Complete project assignments per established schedules.

Must Have:

  • Expertise in product manufacturing processes, packaging, conveyance, inventory, packing, and shipping/receiving systems.
  • Understanding of transit and packaging testing equipment.
  • Understanding of current industry standards as well as related governmental and international environmental regulations.
  • Expertise in various should costing methodologies like Zero base costing, Supplier base costing etc. and systems (aPriori or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple priorities simultaneously and meet critical deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of PLM system Windchill.
  • Working knowledge of Design Software like PTC Creo, ArtiosCAD etc.

  • Understanding and Knowledge of Sustainable Packaging materials.
  • Strong initiative and the ability to be self-directed in completing tasks.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, in addition to strong teamwork, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to represent the company professionally to both customers and suppliers.
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adaptive to internal processes and change, delays, or unexpected events
  • Proficiency at the intermediate to experienced level in CAD and MS Office software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project).
  • Ability to travel up to 35% to domestic and/or international sites
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing methodologies and principles

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s / Master’s degree in in Industrial, Mechanical, or Packaging Engineering or related field.
  • 1-3 Years of experience in full cycle packaging design experience
