The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Financial Aid Counselor, UNLV Financial Aid, Academic Affairs [R0129334]

ROLE of the POSITION

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Outreach and Client Services, the Financial Aid Counselor serves as the front-line customer service works directly with students to enhance their understanding of opportunities for, and processes and responsibilities of a financial aid recipient. This position provides students, families, UNLV staff and external community with information about financing higher education.

This position will be a great fit for someone who enjoys outreach with students and parent, but also has strong communication skills and can spend time working independently but also spending a lot of time in 1:1 counseling sessions. Outside of teamwork within the Financial Aid Office, the Financial Aid Counselor works closely with the UNLV Undergraduate Recruitment team, orientation programs, Clark County High Schools, the Cashiering and Student Accounts Office.

Financial Aid Counselor duties are highly visible to others on-campus and in the community. This individual attends outreach activities both on and off campus where they can meet with prospective and current students and parents, explain financial aid processes and review student accounts for eligibility and award status and will provide group presentations as necessary.

The Financial Aid Counselor will need to know, or be willing and able to learn, the details of and be able to explain many important types and concepts for higher education funding including scholarships, debt management strategies, costs of attendance, basic financial planning, financial aid policy & procedure, necessary paperwork for specific processes, follow up (electronic correspondence, phone calls), business processes, how to navigate web portals (both UNLV and external), and interactive applications. This position requires the incumbent to learn Federal Title IV regulations, general scholarship administration rules, and to be adept in our customer service management system (SalesForce) as well as our student record system (PeopleSoft). The financial aid counselor will be required to determine, accurately monitor and interpret appropriate data.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start of employment.  Employee must not be in overpayment or default status for any Federal Student Aid program or award. 

The successful candidate will have 1-3 years of experience in superior customer service or a relevant Master’s degree, proficiency working in a high-paced environment; be detail-oriented; have familiarity with highly-regulated protocols; and good professional judgement.
