As a Certified or Non-Certified Ophthalmic Assistant, you will support the Ophthalmologist by performing various clinical and administrative tasks throughout the department. You will assist with direct patient care as directed, ensuring everyone feels comfortable and at ease throughout their appointment and exam. In this role, your ability to facilitate a welcoming environment can make a difference in the lives of Cleveland Clinic patients every day.  

This is a full-time position. A caregiver in this role from 8:00am to 5:00pm with variable schedules. Flotations include traveling to the various Cole Eye facilities.  

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Receive and prepare patients for examination or treatment. 
  • Perform routine screening tests. 
  • Document patient information in the patient medical record. 
  • Perform stocking, maintenance and other related duties as assigned, including maintaining exam rooms, equipment and supplies. 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High School Diploma/GED 
  • Successful completion of the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant written exam 
  • Recent graduate of an Ophthalmic Technology Program (not yet COT certified)
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO). 
  • One year of experience providing direct care under the supervision of an Ophthalmologist 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Prior experience with fundus photography, IOL Master and/or contact lens patient training

Physical Requirements:

  • Manual dexterity to operate office equipment and PC.
  • Ability to lift and transport up to 25 pounds.
  • May require extended periods of standing, walking or sitting.
  • Visual acuity, including the ability to distinguish colors.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
