OB Tech - LDRP - Night Shift

Position Highlights:

  • Full Time/Part Time: Full Time 36 hours; 1900-0730
  • Hours: 36 hours night shift 1900-0730; with weekend rotation
  • Job Summary

    The OBT’s primary function, under the direction of a registered nurse (RN), following established procedures, is to perform scrub tech duties and patient care tasks necessary to provide for the care, comfort, and safety of patients.   The OBT also assists in maintaining supplies and equipment, may perform clerical duties, and will promote general neatness and safety on the unit.  Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age(s) of the patients served on the assigned unit. Ages of patient served includes: adult age groups, adolescents, and newborns.

  • What you will do:
  • Patient & Visitor Interactions /Customer Service/ In this role, the OBT will interact with patients and visitors, answering patient call lights, answering phones, and assisting visitors within the facility. 

    Patient Safe Handling/Ambulation/Repositioning: In this role, the OBT will learn patient safe handling skills to allow the OBT to assist in the ambulation of patents and to be able to assist the nursing staff in the transferring, lifting, and /or repositioning of patient utilizing Safe Patient Handling equipment.

    Scrub Tech: In this role, under the supervision of the RN, the OBT will be responsible for preparing and breaking down sterile instruments in labor and delivery rooms, opening operating rooms (OR), setting up OR room for procedures, and performing scrub duties before, during, and after procedures.

    Scrub duties include:

    Maintaining sterility at all times; Sets up supplies and instruments in preparation for procedure Assists in assembling and dispersing to sterile field supplies, instruments and equipment required for the surgical procedure Scrubs, gowns, and gloves according to procedure Maintains accurate counts. Counts all instrument, needle, sharps, and sponge counts with the circulating nurse during identified intervals during OR procedure. Assists in draping of the operative site Anticipates needs and passes instruments, suture, sponges and supplies to the operative team as dictated by surgeons' preference, technique, procedure, and special requirements Handles specimens according to policy and procedure Assists in the application of dressings Post procedure, insures all soiled instruments are cleaned and prepared for SPD. Assists in checking and restocking Operating Room inventory and specialty carts                                                                                              

    Admission/Discharge/Transfers: In this role, the OBT will assist with room set up, welcoming of new patients/ room orientation, discharging and/or transfer of patients. Provides patient/family orientation to room and hospital according to hospital practice. Transports/escorts patient to area of destination ensuring safety; regularly updates patients.

    Procedures and Treatments:  In this role, the OBT will accurately complete and document patient care activities including:  ADL, vital signs, weights, (actual weight on admission or as ordered), intake & output, and calorie counts according to policy and procedure. Effectively explain and perform procedures (e.g., urinary catheter removal, ECGs, wound care and dressing changes under the direction of the nurse).  Notifies appropriate personnel of response and questions. Collects non-sterile specimens such as routine urinalysis and stool specimens. Accurately performs point of care patient blood sugar testing under the direction of the nurse. Promotes and maintains skin integrity by reporting patient problems as they occur, to the appropriate team member.

    Care Companion/Sitter/Observer:  In this role, the OBT may be asked by the RN or LPN to remain with a patient as a means to keep the patient safe.

    Department Specific Tasks:  In this role, the OBT will support the nursing team by indirect patient care activities such as restocking equipment/linens, cleaning equipment and preparing items for Central Supply pick-up etc.  Performs unit support duties including answering and relaying telephone calls, filing and maintaining records, retrieving and delivering supplies, specimens, instruments.  OBT will relay test results received to assigned nurse.  OBT may be given other duties as assigned, staying within AWHONN guidelines for Assistive Personnel

  • Education:
  • Eligible to work in the US
  • Preferred: CNA certification (Current certification on IDPH's health care worker registry) or completion of student nurse clinical rotation
  • Certification:

    •Current BLS certification for the Healthcare Provider issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross

    •  If BLS certification is not current or does not have certification upon hire, required to be obtained within the employee’s introductory period; (within 90 days of hire date).

    Experience: Experience in surgery or OB strongly preferred
