The Product & Project Manager for Custom Pump ETO business and product sustainment is responsible for driving product lifecycle performance and business outcomes for custom pump offerings while also leading disciplined project execution from concept through customer delivery. This role emphasizes product portfolio management, change management, and customer value creation, while maintaining project management attention for engineered‑to‑order (ETO) and product evolution initiatives.

This position acts as a single‑point integrator across product sales, engineering, and operations, serving as the voice of the customer and business. The role balances market needs, technical feasibility, operational readiness, cost, quality, and delivery commitments to ensure custom pump solutions meet customer expectations and Xylem performance standards throughout the full product lifecycle.

Core Responsibilities

Product Management

  • Own the product portfolio and lifecycle strategy for custom pump and engineered solutions in alignment with Xylem growth, margin, and sustaining objectives.
  • Define product value propositions and clear use‑case definitions based on customer needs, market trends, and competitive landscape.
  • Translate customer, market, and field insights into prioritized product requirements, roadmaps, and investment decisions.
  • Lead product lifecycle management initiatives, including:
    • Design‑to‑cost, margin expansion, and complexity reduction
    • Reliability, quality, and manufacturability
    • Product Standardization
    • Risk mitigation and lifecycle planning
  • Partner with commercial, marketing, and sales teams to support pricing strategies, product positioning.
  • Maintain accountability for product business performance, including profitability, cost targets, quality metrics, and customer satisfaction.

Product Evolution & Sustainment Programs

  • Lead product enhancement, cost‑out, and sustainment for ETO products
  • Work closely with engineering, operations, quality, and supply chain to identify, prioritize, and execute design changes that improve performance, reliability, lead time, and total cost.
  • Ensure products comply with applicable industry standards and internal Xylem design and quality guidelines.
  • Drive data‑based decisions using warranty trends, field performance, service feedback, and customer input to improve long‑term product health.

Project Management Execution

  • Lead execution of engineered‑to‑order custom pump projects and approved product evolution initiatives from scope definition through delivery and close‑out.
  • Develop and maintain project plans, schedules, and risk mitigation to ensure project execution.
  • Coordinate cross‑functional teams (engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, quality, service) to meet technical, cost, and delivery commitments.
  • Serve as the primary customer interface for assigned projects, ensuring timely communication, issue resolution, and expectation management.
  • Proactively identify, escalate, and mitigate technical, schedule, cost, and supply chain risks.
  • Promote continuous improvement in project execution, cross‑functional handoffs, and overall customer experience.

Cross‑Functional Management

  • Balance short‑term project delivery priorities with long‑term product and portfolio objectives.
  • Facilitate design reviews, decision forums, and trade‑off discussions to align technical, commercial, and operational stakeholders.
  • Align engineering and operational priorities with product strategy, customer commitments, and capacity constraints.
  • Support readiness for product updates and sustained offerings, including documentation, training, and internal communication.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Product portfolio performance against margin, cost, quality, reliability objectives.
  • On‑time execution of custom pump projects and committed product roadmap milestones (≥90%).
  • Reduction in rework, late‑stage changes, and avoidable quality issues.
  • Successful delivery of cost‑out, complexity reduction, and product sustaining initiatives.
  • Customer satisfaction driven by predictable execution, responsiveness, and quality.
  • Effective cross‑functional alignment and execution discipline.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related engineering discipline required.
  • 5+ years of experience in product management, program/project management, or a hybrid product‑program management role within engineered industrial products.
  • Experience with engineered‑to‑order (ETO), configurable, or custom product portfolios.
  • Demonstrated experience managing product lifecycle, sustainment, cost reduction, or portfolio optimization initiatives.
  • Experience with pumps, rotating equipment, or heavy industrial equipment preferred.
  • Strong customer‑facing communication skills with the ability to lead cross‑functional teams through influence.
  • Proficiency in project, and lifecycle management systems (e.g., SAP, MS Project or equivalent).
  • PMP certification preferred; product management or Lean/Six Sigma training is a plus.

Compensation & Benefits

The salary range for this position is $85,000 to $105,000 plus bonus. Starting pay is dependent on multiple factors, including skills, experience, and work location, and is not typically at the top of the range.
