POSITION PURPOSE:         

Performs all aspects of clinical technical procedures for patient diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and monitoring.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Processes clinical client work including preparation of test orders in the LIS, requesting billing numbers for direct bill clients, delivery of properly collected and verified specimens to appropriate areas and ordering of phlebotomy styles.
  • Performs all aspects (pre-analytic, analytic, post-analytic phases) of clinical technical procedures/bench assignments in Chemistry, Special Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Blood Bank, Microbiology and/or Serology as assigned by the Section Supervisor.
  • Reports results utilized for patient diagnosis, treatments, prevention, and monitoring directly to physicians without prior review by supervisory staff or the Medical Director.
  • Performs designated Quality Control with each procedure, documents and analyzes data, and takes appropriate action as determined by the results.
  • Is proficient at operation, preventative maintenance, and basic troubleshooting procedures for instrumentation to which assigned.  Documents and takes appropriate action as designated by the section/shift to which assigned.
  • Maintains proficiency and actively participates in specimen collection.  Ensures proper patient identification, specimen labeling and integrity, and LIS documentation.  Reassures patient and ensures comfort prior to leaving the bedside or releasing the patient.
  • Is assigned or assists with the training of students and new hires.
  • Performs evaluation of proposed procedures and instrumentation including gathering data, performing statistical analysis and correlation studies, and reporting recommendations.
  • Achieves and maintains competency for all phases of technical procedures and instrumentation in each technical specialty to which assigned (see department competency documentation).
  • Assumes temporary responsibility for the section in the absence of the Section Supervisor as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned by the supervisor or director.

SPECIALIZED KNOW-HOW & REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or clinical specialty required as defined by CLIA 88.
  • Technologist (MT or MLS) or specialist certification with ASCP, NCA (or eligible-required to obtain within 12 months of hire)
  • Demonstrates the knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to any age-related needs of the patients served on assigned unit.  Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development appropriate to the patient population served.  Able to assess and interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s needs and provide the appropriate care, including age-related care, needed by the neonate, pediatric, adolescent and/or geriatric patient group.
