About This Opportunity 

We are currently seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow / Research Fellow for the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision Making and Society (ADM+S) project 'Australian Ad Observatory: Investigating mobile and dynamic advertising via computational and participatory approaches.’

Within this project, the successful applicant will independently lead research activities and contribute to collaborative work focused on improving the observability of digital advertising.

The successful applicant will be a highly motivated researcher excited to work in a multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional research team to develop and implement novel approaches for studying the automated advertising model of digital media platforms. The researcher will play a key role in supporting data donation research with Australian participants with the project team. Participants in the project will use novel digital tools to collect and donate the ads they see in their digital feeds to the research team. This will include working with the project team to develop data donation methods, managing the recruitment and engagement with participants, organising and analysing donated data.

About You

Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Level A)

  • Completion or near completion of a PhD in Media Studies, Cultural Studies, Science and Technology Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, Public Policy or another relevant discipline relating to the Centre’s research programs and the Australian Ad Observatory project.

  • An emerging profile in research related to the areas of automated-decision making, advertising and/or digital media platforms related to the Australian Ad Observatory project.

  • Demonstrated competence in cultural, social and/or digital research methods involving working with human participants.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team, while maintaining an individual profile in a research area and contributing to the collegial life of the Centre within and beyond UQ.

  • An emerging research track record of high-quality publications, and grant applications.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to represent and promote the Centre (where appropriate) at a university and wider community level, including industry, government and professional bodies.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, the language of instruction at The University of Queensland.

Research Fellow (Level B)

  • Completion of a PhD in Media Studies, Cultural Studies, Science and Technology Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, Public Policy or another relevant discipline relating to the Centre’s research programs and the Australian Ad Observatory project.

  • A growing profile in research related to the areas of automated-decision making, advertising and/or digital media platforms related to the Australian Ad Observatory project.

  • Demonstrated competence in cultural, social and/or digital research methods involving working with human participants.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team, while maintaining an individual profile in a research area and contributing to the collegial life of the Centre within and beyond UQ.

  • A growing research track record of high-quality publications, and successful grant applications.

  • A growing record of supervision of Honours and Research Higher Degree students to successful.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to represent and promote the Centre (where appropriate) at a university and wider community level, including industry, government and professional bodies.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, the language of instruction at The University of Queensland.

The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, criminal check, education check.
