The candidate for this position will work in a technical role for a space program in Sterling, VA, in the Civil Space Systems business area within the Tactical Space Systems Group. Our Civil Space Systems programs include technical roles at the mission, segment, and component levels. They span the entire program life cycle from early concept studies, design development, system integration/test, launch and early operations, mission operations/ sustainment, and system disposal.

Successful candidates for this position will serve as Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) 2 Systems Engineer to coordinate and develop integrated work products between the program and secondary payload providers for future CRS missions.  Systems Engineer responsibilities include development of statement of work for secondary payload providers, development of system interface requirements definition document, support delivery of CRS analysis and engineering inputs to provider for integrated analyses and drawings, and support delivery of inputs for integrated verifications.  Systems Engineer will work with secondary payload providers and CRS engineering colleagues to define and track receivable and deliverables between CRS program and secondary payload providers.  Systems Engineer may also support CRS Program and mission milestone reviews and other duties as required.

This position will expose the candidate to equal parts technical competency, forward thinking ideas, and execution focus. This position requires a functional understanding of systems engineering as well as a basic understanding of space systems, including secondary payload integration.

The responsibilities of this role may include:

  • Interface with payload providers as the single point of contact between the CRS program and the customer; can foster trust, open communication and understanding with customers who are unfamiliar with spacecraft integration.

  • Cost account management of the project including basis of estimate (BOE) creation and providing status throughout the lifecycle of the project.

  • Evaluating design documentation and verification for compliance with customer and internally derived requirements.

  • Develop concept of operations for the secondary payload.

  • Supporting mission operation tasks for Launch, Operations, and Disposal.

  • Providing support to selected elements of the program Systems Engineering Team

  • Supporting and delivering SE Products and other deliverables, with a focus on mission success

  • Developing/implementing and communicating solutions to routine Engineering problems.

  • Contributing to the technical tasks supporting the program.

  • Providing systems engineering support for technical reviews.

  • Writing status and technical performance reviews, analyses and reports.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Systems Engineer 3 - Bachelor’s Degree in STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Math or related area and 5 years of experience; or Master’s Degree and 3 years of experience; or 1 year of experience with PhD. 

  • Previous systems engineering experience, especially on space development programs or satellite operations

  • Experience with providing Systems Engineering support as part of spacecraft to secondary payload efforts

  • Experience with command and telemetry database

  • Experience defining requirements & interfaces

  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government DoD security clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding of spacecraft integration & test, launch, and mission operations

  • Experience developing verification documentation

  • Experience with architecture development

  • Familiarity with electrical & computer systems

Salary Range: $107,300.00 - $160,900.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
