Asia Pacific

The Asia-Pacific region (“APAC”) is a key and growing part of our diverse, global portfolio. APAC offers access to some of the world’s most dynamic markets.

With the opening of the Hong Kong office in 2013, we expanded our presence in the region and opened a Singapore office in 2020 and a Mumbai office in 2022 to build on this foundation. This increased access to opportunities in India, Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia. Hong Kong continues to be our gateway to opportunities in Greater China, South Korea and Japan.

The opportunity

If so, join the Ontario Teachers’ student program! We are looking for dedicated self-starters who share our passion for investing and want to learn how we execute on investment opportunities and manage our existing investments across three departments: Real Estate, Infrastructure & Natural Resources, and Private Capital. 2 internship positions are available with each internship starting in January for 6 months. There will be a further 2 positions available from July-December.

Real Estate

The Real Estate team comprises nearly 40 investment professionals, across offices in Toronto, Dallas, London, Sao Paulo and Singapore. The Real Estate Group invests and manages assets across a geographically diverse portfolio of approximately $28 billion with assets in North America, South America, Europe and Asia, including Australia.

The Real Estate team in Singapore consists of 7 investment professionals who manage our APAC real estate portfolio. Our mandate focuses on driving compelling risk adjusted returns by investing in high-quality real estate assets in desirable asset classes and locations.

Infrastructure & Natural Resources

The Infrastructure & Natural Resources (“INR”) Group invests in global infrastructure and natural resources companies to deliver growing, inflation-linked cash flows over a long-term investment horizon. Our global team consists of over 70 investment professionals handle a geographically diverse CAD 40 billion global investment portfolio. Our investments are primarily through direct, privately held, controlling or co-controlling stakes, rather than through funds or passive holdings.

Our INR Asia Pacific team is based in Singapore, which consists of 12 investment professionals who manage a portfolio of CAD 4 billion. Our recent investments include the acquisition of Connexa in New Zealand, the formation of Mahindra Susten in India, the take-private of Spark Infrastructure in Australia, and our acquisition of Equis Developments which operates across Australia, Japan, and South Korea.

Private Capital

OTPP’s Private Capital (PC) team leads the Plan’s private equity activities. With over C$60 billion of AUM globally, Private Capital invests directly and through private equity funds in companies around the world seeking to grow and add value over the long run. Private Capital stands as one of the largest and most sophisticated pools of capital in the world. Through over 200+ direct and fund investments, Private Capital has generated a net internal rate of return of roughly 20% since inception.

The Private Capital team in Singapore consists of 8 individuals, managing a portfolio of almost C$1bn AUM. The portfolio currently consists of 4 assets across Australia and New Zealand – Abano, Greenstone and Navitas in Australia, and Awanui in New Zealand.

Who you’ll work with

The investment intern will have the opportunity to work closely with our investment teams during the internship. The internship will be structured as a rotational program, in which the investment intern will be rotating across 2 of the 3 teams over the 6-month internship period. At the point of application, students are encouraged to indicate their asset class preferences, and share the motivation behind their preferences.

What you’ll do

You will be involved in assisting the team in analysing potential new investment opportunities, managing our existing investments and will gain the following hands-on experience and training:

  • Hone your financial modelling abilities by analysing investment opportunities

  • Learn to identify key value drivers and risks for investments and perform related sensitivity and scenario analyses

  • Support due diligence exercises

  • Prepare valuations, presentations, and reports to senior investment professionals

  • Develop and analyse business cases for portfolio company / asset value creation initiatives (debt refinancings, expansion projects, management compensation, on-going budgeting, etc.)

What you’ll need

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate with a concentration in investments, finance, or accounting

  • Previous intern experience in M&A, investment banking, private equity, equity research, INR, or real estate.

  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) required

  • Familiarity with financial modelling – you are a number whiz!  

  • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills and ability to perform in-depth analysis

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills – you are a people person and love working in a dynamic team!

  • Ability to balance multiple priorities and initiatives while remaining detail-oriented

  • Currently enrolled in your 3rd / 4th year

  • You will be returning to your studies after the work term is completed
