Xylem is a Fortune 500 global water solutions company dedicated to advancing sustainable impact and empowering the people who make water work every day. As a leading water technology company with 23,000 employees operating in over 150 countries, Xylem is at the forefront of addressing the world's most critical water challenges. We invite passionate individuals to join our team, dedicated to exceeding customer expectations through innovative and sustainable solutions.

Mechanical mixers make up an important part of Xylem’s product portfolio. The main application area for these mixers is mixing in wastewater treatment processes.

The purpose of mixing in aerobic applications is to suspend solids, create circulation and even enhance oxygen transfer. Sufficient mixing in aerobic zones is essential as it can reduce the operational footprint, minimize energy costs and improve process efficiency.

Role Summary

Xylem is a world leader in water technology, and our CFD team is at the heart of our innovation. We are currently undergoing a strategic migration of our simulation workflows to a new, high-performance OpenFOAM-based platform.

We are seeking a Summer Intern who is passionate about fluid dynamics and coding to help us transfer, develop, and validate our wastewater treatment models. This isn't just about running simulations; you will be deep in the "engine room" of our solvers, ensuring our digital twins for mixers, aerators, and treatment tanks are more accurate and efficient than ever.

Key Responsibilities

  • Model Migration & Development: Port existing validated models into the new OpenFOAM environment, ensuring compatibility with the latest libraries.

  • Wastewater Physics Modeling: Configure and test solvers for multiphase flows (air/water/sludge), non-Newtonian rheology, and mass transfer.

  • Automation & Scripting: Develop Python or Bash scripts to automate pre-processing (meshing) and post-processing tasks to streamline the team's workflow.

  • Validation: Compare simulation results against experimental data or legacy software outputs to ensure high-fidelity transitions.

Technical Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.

  • OpenFOAM Expertise: Demonstrated experience with OpenFOAM (standard solvers like interFoam, simpleFoam, or custom solvers).

  • Coding Skills: Proficiency in C++ (specifically for OpenFOAM library modification) and Linux/Unix command-line operations.

  • Fluid Mechanics: Strong theoretical background in the Navier-Stokes equations, turbulence modeling (RANS), and multiphase flow theory.

  • Meshing: Experience with Ansa or similar meshing tools.

Preferred Skills (Technical Stack)

  • OpenFOAM Development: Experience navigating and modifying the OpenFOAM source code.

  • C++ Coding: Proficiency in C++ for library development, including custom boundary conditions, transport models, or fvOptions.

  • Python: Strong Python skills for data analysis, handling large-scale simulation outputs, and workflow automation.

  • Linux: Comfort working in a high-performance computing (HPC) environment.

  • Meshing: Experience working with Ansa meshing tool or similar.

What We Offer

  • Impactful Work: Your contributions will directly influence how Xylem designs sustainable water solutions globally.

  • Mentorship: Work alongside senior CFD experts in a collaborative, high-tech environment.

  • Tooling: Exposure to industrial-scale high-performance computing (HPC) clusters.

Duration

Total eleven (11) weeks, nine (9) working weeks and two (2) free weeks during the summer. Start and finish of the project according to agreement.
