Under general supervision, the Radiology Student Intern supports the radiology department by assisting in patient care and imaging procedures. With foundational knowledge and hands-on experience, this role allows students, actively enrolled in an accredited radiology technology program, to refine technical skills, take on increased responsibilities, and support the imaging team with greater independence in preparation for full certification.

Advanced Patient Care and Safety

  • Prepare and position patients independently, considering specific exam requirements
  • Ensure adherence to modality safe standards for patients, self and team members
  • Communicate procedure steps and expectations clearly to patients, adapting explanation based on patient demographics and needs

Technical Competence and Imaging Proficiency

  • Conduct basic imaging exams independently with oversight from licensed technologists for complex exams
  • Operate imaging equipment, set technical parameters, and ensure optimal image quality, making adjustments as needed
  • Apply knowledge of anatomy, positioning, and pathology to obtain diagnostic images efficiently and accurately

    

Image Evaluation and Quality Assurance

  • Evaluate image quality independently, identifying any issues with positioning or technical factors and making corrections as needed
  • Participate in quality assurance activities by reviewing images for completeness and accuracy
  • Assist in case study reviews, developing skills in diagnostic critique

Workflow and Departmental Support

  • Manage patient flow to ensure smooth departmental operations 
  • Coordinate with other care team members, acting as a liaison to optimize patient care and operational efficiency

Clinical Skill Development

  • Engage in advanced learning opportunities, including observing and assisting in more complex imaging procedures, to expand proficiency in imaging techniques and patient care

General Responsibilities

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Must be currently enrolled in an accredited Radiology Technology program in second year (candidates within 6 weeks of entering second year of approved program may be considered for employment).

Experience: None required

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required:  Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  

  • Knowledge of radiology procedures, equipment, surface, anatomy, medical terminology as it relates to radiological work, and safety procedures and measures.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with patients and other team members.
  • Willingness to learn and accept feedback.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism in a clinical environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of patient confidentiality and HIPAA guidelines.
