As a Design Engineer in the Large Mining Trucks Electrical Installation team, you will be joining an innovative team responsible for integrating electrical and electronic systems into some of Caterpillar’s largest mining trucks. You will have the unique opportunity to direct and contribute to the concept, development, and design of harnesses, power cables and installations for systems from 24 V DC to 3500 V AC. The Electrical Installation team is part of the Rigid Frame Trucks organization and is responsible for end-to-end design and development of key machine systems for multiple Caterpillar applications.

The role is split between mechanical (60%) and electrical (40%) design activities, with direct involvement in the integration, installation, and commissioning of systems on the machine.


Your responsibilities will span coordinating cross-functional activities involving product development, value chain optimization, manufacturing processes, commercial, and product support. You will be accountable for managing project timelines, product quality, and ensuring the successful integration of electrical solutions that address unique challenges within the product applications.

What you will do:

Create and refine designs in the development of wiring harnesses, power cables and the installation of related components including installation hardware for electrical and electronic systems on mobile machinery.
Utilize Creo to create highly integrated designs within the machine platforms
Collaborate with suppliers, purchasing and manufacturing representatives
Review CAD models, layouts, assemblies, detailed part drawings, and bills-of-material for accuracy and conformance to specifications and Caterpillar Engineering Standards
Utilize design tools to optimize designs for manufacturing, service support, cost, and quality.
Manage New Product Introduction (NPI) deliverables including, product cost targets, product reliability goals, and drawing release quality.
Working effectively with a global team to deliver program objectives
Collaborate with suppliers, global manufacturing facilities, engineering system teams and the core product groups to minimize total cost of ownership.
Support Continuous Product Improvement (CPI) process by modifying designs to address Product Support and Manufacturing feedback.
Support activities in the factory including fit ups, root cause investigations and basic electrical troubleshooting

Degree Requirement: Bachelor’s degree in an accredited Engineering curriculum.

What skills you will have:

Technical Excellence: Experience in mechanical or electrical design — especially in harnesses and cable systems. Mining truck or mining industry application knowledge is desirable.

Computer-Aided Design & Engineering: Extensive experience with Creo, Vis View, and Teamcenter.

Product Design – MFG: Understands large equipment assembly and electrical component integration. Experienced with harness manufacturing and cost factors. Guides product development and ensures functional design. Reviews customer feedback to improve performance.

Analytical Thinking: Skilled in evaluating risks, costs, and success factors to solve complex problems. Uses the right tools and research to identify root causes and drive effective solutions.

Effective Communications: Strong communication and collaboration skills. Experience directing and reviewing work of other engineers is highly desired. Ability to work with global team members.

Managing Multiple Priorities: Ability to handle multiple tasks and adapt to shifting priorities. Resolves conflicts and maintains delivery timelines.

Product Design and Development: Knowledge of product features; ability to design, build, and develop a new product, technology, or service from concept through to production.

Additional information:
This position requires the candidate to work full-time in the Tucson, AZ or Decatur, IL office.

Summary Pay Range:

$112,710.00 - $169,060.00
