Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for an Engineer I, II, or Senior to join our Power Production team. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. While this position is based at Idaho Power’s downtown Boise location, we offer both flexible schedules and the opportunity to work up to 40% remote.

What does an Engineer I, II, or Senior do for us?

Engineer I

While operating under general supervision and with oversight, they develop technical expertise in their field.  This role plans and leads assignments and projects. They may also interface with internal departments and external organizations and receives guidance from leaders and other engineers as needed.

Engineer II

While operating under limited supervision, they have an intermediate level of technical expertise in their field.  This role plans and leads moderately complex assignments and projects, interfaces with internal departments and external organizations, and receives high-level guidance from leaders and other engineers as needed.
 

Senior Engineer

While operating under minimal supervision and using independent initiative, they have comprehensive technical expertise in their field. This role plans and leads complex assignments and projects, interfaces with internal departments and external organizations, and mentors other engineers and engineering support staff as needed.

General job duties applicable to all areas of expertise:

  • Plans and leads projects, assignments and technical investigations
  • Acts as a liaison between other departments and organizations
  • Evaluates progress and results, recommending changes in procedures
  • Exercises moderate technical judgment in decision-making and independent action
  • Responsible for budgeting, financial accountability and timelines on assigned projects
  • Utilizes industry and discipline-related knowledge to interpret and comply with regulations as required by NERC, FERC, WECC, EPA, NESC, OSHA, FCC, etc.

Specific additional job duties: 

This engineering position is in the Power Production Electrical Engineering, and the group’s efforts in maintaining the Company’s generation assets as well as the compliance activities that go along with operating these assets.

Several areas of responsibility for this Electrical Engineering group are as follows:

  • Generation Operations Support, including:
    • Investigation of protective trip operations
    • Optimization of the efficient use of water through units and spillways
    • Support for optimal EIM performance and readiness
  • Arc Flash analysis and program administration
  • Support compliance with applicable NERC Reliability and Security Standards.  Including writing and/or revising compliance plan documents and preparing evidence in support of audits.
  • Generator testing program administration
  • Generation asset condition assessment
  • Generation Protection, including:
    • Support of Protection Upgrade Capital projects
    • Settings development and review
    • Support of the relay testing program
    • Coordination of Protection Systems with appropriate entities
  • Support for refurbishment of generators, including:
    • Stator rewinds
    • Rotor pole refurbishment
    • Generator core repair
    • New core installations
    • All associated acceptance testing
  • Generator controls, including:
    • Modeling according to NERC reliability standard requirements
    • Governor performance monitoring and tuning
    • Excitation system performance monitoring and tuning
  • Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) controls and integration, including:
    • Controller design and commissioning
    • Mathematical modeling according to NERC reliability standard requirements
  • Voltage and Frequency Performance monitoring and tuning support.Power Plant auxiliary equipment monitoring and maintenance
  • Interface with Generation Dispatch and EMS interface systems
  • Support power plant cyber security
  • Ongoing review and improvement of Generation policies, procedures, and programs

The successful candidate will support all these activities as needed; however, anticipated areas of focus include:

  • Arc Flash analysis and program administration
  • Generator testing program administration
  • Support compliance with applicable NERC Reliability and Security Standards 
  • Including writing and/or revising compliance plan documents and preparing evidence in support of audits

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution

OR

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from a non-ABET accredited institution and a Professional Engineer (PE) license

Experience:

  • Engineer I – 0-2 years of related experience
  • Engineer II – 2 years of related experience
  • Senior Engineer – 6 years of related engineering experience OR 5 years of related engineering experience, PE or advanced engineering degree, and 3 years in the area of expertise

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position

Preferred:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution
  • Engineer I or II – Engineer in Training (EIT) designation
  • Senior Engineer – PE license


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires walking on even/uneven surfaces and ascents/descents, up to 5 miles daily, and while carrying 14-26 lbs. of equipment. Lifting of up to 36 lbs. and carrying up to 30 lbs., (up to 50 feet), is performed. Hiking is performed up to 1 mile. Climbing of ladders/racks and work within elevated lifts (up to 40 feet high) with competency in use of safety equipment is required. Squatting, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lying at ground level is performed to work within confined spaces of power plants/dams/generators, for extended intervals up to a full shift. Driving is required to perform work throughout the IPC territory, (3-7 hours). The above is a summary of the primary essential functions of the position. Travel with out-of-town stays may be required.

Internal Idaho Power applicants only: Must have 6 months or greater at Engineer II level, Step 13 to be eligible for Senior Engineer

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
If an existing Senior Engineer is selected to fill the posting, the department leader will transfer the Senior Engineer into the position at their current step. At the six-month anniversary of the hire date, the leader must review the engineer’s performance and submit to the Engineer Oversight Committee (EOC) a Senior Engineer justification form requesting placement at the appropriate grade and step based on the engineer’s performance.
