Job Description:
Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for a Real Time/Day Ahead Energy Trader or Senior to join our Power Supply team. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. Our work plays a critical role in communities we serve across Idaho and Oregon, and we’re working hard to safely provide our customers with the safe, reliable, affordable energy they depend on.
What does an Energy Trader do for us?
The Energy Trader sells energy and energy products in wholesale markets on an hourly/daily basis with supervision. The role involves outbound marketing, commercial negotiation, deliverability assessment, structuring and negotiation, credit and risk evaluation, transmission purchasing/reserving, transaction/accounting recording, delivery scheduling and generation dispatch coordination, and complying with industry procedures and regulatory requirements. The position requires work in the Real Time (aka Hour Ahead) and Day Ahead markets on a variable rotating shift schedule that covers a 24/7/365 trading desk.
This role additionally supports the natural gas energy traders and plays a critical role in monitoring market conditions, coordinating nominations, and ensuring reliable gas flows across pipelines. The position contributes to real time scheduling, storage optimization, and asset management while responding quickly to operational changes, weather impacts, and system constraints. Success in the role requires strong communication with traders and system operators to maintain balanced positions, minimize risk, and support both commercial and operational objectives in a fast paced environment.
This position also requires the incumbent to leverage understanding of the electric power sector, including generation, transmission, utilities, markets, and regulations; analyze energy market data and trends; exhibit strong judgement; and demonstrate effective communication with numerous stakeholders to successfully execute transactions for the company. The Energy Trader must also collaborate with others to achieve individual and organizational goals; identify and solve problems; and provide support and direction to drive team’s continuous improvement.
In addition to the meaningful work we do, we offer work-life balance, competitive pay and benefits, an employee incentive plan, and both a 401k employer-match and a pension plan, making Idaho Power one of the best employers in the state.
