General Description:

Under general supervision, provides administrative support to surgical services.

Essential Responsibilities:

Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position.  Inability to perform these responsibilities with or without an accommodation may result in disqualification from the position. 

  • Responsible for ensuring that all required steps and forms are completed prior to outpatient surgery. 

  • Examines preoperative charts and determines if all required documents are present. 

  • Informs nurse manager of any deficits in the preoperative chart.

  • Works closely with the referring physician’s office staff to obtain required documents for patients.

  • Helps to educate the physician’s office staff on required documents and the schedule for receipt of the documents.

  • Obtains all missing documents and places in patient’s chart.

  • May handle calls with patients to answer questions or obtain additional information.

  • Maintains all medical records in accordance with established guidelines. 

  • Ensures that all required documents and results are properly posted and included in the patient’s record.  

  • Maintains required data on Meditech. 

  • Works closely with other staff members involved in the scheduling of preoperative services to ensure that all documents, testing and orders are completed prior to surgery.

General Responsibilities:

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience: 5+ years of experience required. Three (3) years of administrative clerical experience in a patient care setting preferred.

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: None

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  

  • Knowledge of preoperative requirements and processes.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology. 

  • Ability to maintain a professional attitude while dealing with others. 

  • Excellent communication skills particularly when using the telephone. 

  • Excellent organizational skills which include the ability to effectively handle a variety of tasks occurring at the same time. 

  • Excellent computer skills and typing/keyboarding skills sufficient to meet the requirements of the position.
