R&D Engineer

Your role and responsibilities

In this role, you will have the opportunity to contribute to ABB’s success with technology, software, product, and system development. Each day, you will identify and implement innovative solutions to relevant problems. You will also showcase your expertise by providing ideas and by being able to work both independently and as a part of a Research & Development (R&D) team.
The R&D center in Skien has two laboratories, 45 talented engineers and is considered a “Centre of Excellence” within the organization. The R&D center is responsible for inventing new technologies for the business and is facing large projects focused on the development of more environmentally friendly products.

You will be mainly accountable for:

• Design, and develop mechanical components for switchgear technology projects while utilizing CAD software to create detailed designs and technical drawings.
• Conduct analysis of multiple domains in switchgear design, including thermal, mechanical, and electrical aspects, throughout the component design phase using 3D modeling techniques.
•  Actively contributing to the exploration and innovation within the field of Medium Voltage Switchgear, aiding in the development of new technologies and products to meet evolving industry needs.
• Document design processes, specifications, and test results for future reference and continuous improvement.
• Participate in design reviews and provide technical expertise and recommendations.
•  Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment between mechanical design and overall project goals.
• Overseeing prototyping activities to develop and refine product designs, while also organizing and planning testing initiatives to evaluate product performance under various conditions.
• Engage collaboratively with partners on R&D projects across global initiatives.

Your background

• Experience in 3D design systems such as SolidWorks 
• BSc or higher in Mechanical Engineering or similar
• Experience with engineering design and simulation tools
• Comfortable with the English language
