Position Summary
The Compliance Associate for Intellectual Property is responsible for ensuring that Washington University meets all compliance requirements related to intellectual property (IP), particularly in connection with federal funding agencies, including NIH, as outlined in the Bayh-Dole Act. This role involves overseeing various IP-related reporting obligations, including disclosures of inventions and patents, and ensuring compliance with agreements involving the Department of Veterans Affairs, private foundations, and industry partners.
The Compliance Associate will serve as a key liaison, facilitating communication between office personnel, university investigators and departments, as well as government and private funding partners. This position plays a critical role in maintaining adherence to all regulatory and sponsorship guidelines while supporting the university’s IP management efforts.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Federal Reporting and Government Compliance
- Collaborates with the Compliance Manager to ensure full compliance with federal Intellectual Property requirements related to all federal awards.
- The Compliance Associate will manage reporting obligations through internal platforms and external federal reporting platforms.
- Responsibilities include timely reporting of inventions, patent applications, title elections, patent extension requests, and assisting with managing system notifications and annual utilization reporting.
Invention Sponsorship Compliance
- Reviews every disclosure (invention and material) submitted to the Office of Technology Management, identifying funding sources and ensuring compliance with sponsorship agreements.
- The Compliance Associate will record and report invention disclosures to external partners.
- Participates in weekly cross-functional meetings to discuss new disclosures.
Industry and Foundation Reporting and Compliance
- Supports the Compliance Manager in obtaining, tracking and ensuring compliance with industry and foundation agreements, and related activities as needed.

Salary Range
$45,600.00 - $75,300.00 / Annually
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
