About the Role & Mission

At Hotspex Media, we are building AI support workflows that help our team achieve a better work-life balance while delivering exceptional, differentiated services to internal users and clients alike.

This is an exciting, production-focused role for an engineer eager to learn and contribute to key AI subsystems. You will work alongside senior engineers to bridge software engineering and applied mathematics while building the core AI infrastructure for a media agency. We provide direct mentorship and a clear growth path to full ownership and autonomy.

  • Reports to: Director of AI & ML

  • Location: Hybrid with the option for Remote if Outside Greater Toronto Area (must be legally authorized to work in and based in Canada)

  • Team: Small, high-autonomy team with direct access to leadership.

  • Impact: Direct ownership over key services powering automated digital advertising analytics and optimization tools across a roadmap of projects to support our team and clients.

What You Will Own

As a Junior AI Engineer, your primary function is to master the fundamentals of our core services, rapidly build technical ownership, and deliver production-ready code in our sophisticated Rust-based AI systems.

  • AI-Enhanced Productivity: Actively leverage modern LLM-based coding assistants (like Claude and Cursor, as listed in the Technology Stack) and other internal AI tools to accelerate daily coding tasks, conduct rapid prototyping, and maintain the highest code quality standards.

  • Communication: Clearly document architectures and translate technical decisions for both engineering peers and non-technical stakeholders (e.g., campaign managers and analysts).

  • CI/CD & DevOps: Maintain and extend the CI/CD pipeline with GitHub Actions, including parallel testing across 10 libraries and selective deployment to 6 production services.

What You Will Contribute To

Work in close collaboration with senior engineers and the Director of AI & ML, offering direct exposure to system design, optimization theory, and best practices in large-scale production engineering.

  • Production Engineering: contribute to the full lifecycle of services, from initial development to deployment and operation. You will learn best practices for scaling, monitoring, and incident response.

  • Platform Integrations: support in the design and build of complex data pipelines from 10+ external marketing and data platforms (Google Ads, Meta, LinkedIn, Google Drive, etc.) through our MCP (Model Context Protocol) router servers to the final dimensional data model in Postgres.

  • Applied AI Systems: Implement and advance our RAG Search Service (Smart Vectorization Roadmap), including implementing vector similarity search with metadata filtering, contributing to hybrid retrieval strategies, and LLM application design for internal tools.

  • Data Engineering: Design schemas and write dbt models that transform marketing platform data into conformed dimensional schemas (Kimball-style facts/dimensions) in Postgres.

  • System Design: Design internal APIs (REST + JSON-RPC), error handling patterns, and shared library interfaces within the multi-crate Rust workspace.

  • Applied Mathematics: Learn and apply core principles of optimization theory and statistical reasoning to real-world business problems, with direct mentorship from the Director of AI & ML.

  • Automation: Support with implementing and maintaining n8n workflow orchestration, coordinating service calls, retries, alerting, and cross-service data flows.

Technology Stack

You will be working with a modern, high-performance tech stack. Prior professional experience in every area is not required, but a strong foundational knowledge and an eagerness to learn these specific technologies are essential. Our core infrastructure is built in Rust, and you will gain experience with:

  • Languages: Rust, Python, SQL

  • Data Stack: Postgres, BigQuery, dbt, Redis

  • AI/ML: RAG Pipelines, Embedding Models, Vector Similarity Search, AI Agents

  • Cloud/Infra: GCP, Docker Compose, GitHub Actions (for CI/CD).

  • Observability: Cloud Monitoring + (Looker is a great differential)

  • Tools: Linear, GitHub, n8n, Code assistants (Claude, Cursor)

What this Role is NOT

To ensure a mutual fit, please note this is a high-impact engineering role with specific boundaries:

  • Not a dedicated research position: Your primary focus is on production code and systems. While you will be encouraged to research new techniques for specific project deliverables, this role does not involve exploratory R&D or publishing academic papers.

  • Not a data science role: No primary function of ad-hoc analysis or Jupyter notebook workflows.

  • Not a consulting or advisory role: You will be writing production code daily.

  • Not a DevOps-only role: Infrastructure work is in service of the AI systems, not standalone operations.

Our Values:

We know our people are what allows us to achieve all that we do and that’s why it’s important that everyone we bring onto our team lives our values with us.

  • 🦁 Courage

  • 1️⃣ One Team

  • πŸ’ͺ Resilience

  • πŸš€ Empowerment
