The Custom Software Solutions Manager will support the Materials and Structural Analysis Division as part of the VDS (Visualization and Data Solutions) Data-to-Results (D2R) strategic unit. This role combines technical software leadership with commercial execution, ensuring customer-driven customization projects translate into scalable value and revenue growth.

The Materials and Structural Analysis Electron Microscopy (EM) business enables customers to find meaningful answers to questions that accelerate breakthrough discoveries, increase efficiency, and ultimately change the world. The EM business designs, manufactures, and supports the broadest range of high-performance microscopy workflows that provide images and answers in the micro-, nano-, and picometer scales.

The VDS D2R unit provides analytical digital solutions to accelerate innovation and efficiency across research and industrial laboratories. This includes advanced visualization and analysis SW for understanding 2D-5D bioimaging sample and materials structures and properties; 3D visualization and image analysis toolkits and collaborative imaging data management platform for traceability of image-based scientific experiments.

How you will make an impact:

We are looking for a manager to lead a team focused on software development, prototyping and field applications development. A professional that can contribute new insights, develop and build talent and present solutions to our customers in various fields within academic, commercial and government accounts.

As a Manager, Custom Software Solutions, you will build and maintain the relationship with other organizations primarily in Materials Research, Life Sciences and Semiconductor domains. You will be primarily responsible for supporting our commercial goals by leading a team of developers and field applications engineers for creating proofs-of-concepts, evaluating feasibility, providing customization time estimates by preparing statements-of-work (SoWs). As a manager, you will also be responsible for timely delivery of committed projects and managing customer expectations.

How You Will Make an Impact

We are seeking a hands-on software development leader to manage a team of C++ developers and field application engineers focused on customization, prototyping, and advanced workflow solutions.

This role bridges engineering excellence with commercial impact. You will:

  • Drive the CSS roadmap and lead the team to deliver high-quality solutions with transparency, predictability and on-time execution
  • Establish clear priorities, structure execution processes and evaluate using performance standards to ensure consistent delivery aligned with business objectives
  • Translate customer requirements into technical specifications, feasibility assessments, and Statements of Work (SoWs).
  • Own delivery commitments for customization projects, ensuring alignment with scope, budget, and revenue targets.
  • Support commercial growth by enabling proof-of-concepts (PoCs) and custom solutions that accelerate deal closure and expand account value.
  • Balance innovation with scalability, ensuring field-driven customizations align with long-term product strategy.

This position requires a leader who can manage both people and process—building technical depth within the team while maintaining a strong focus on revenue impact and customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical & Development Leadership

  • Manage a team of software developers with primary expertise in C++ and related technologies.
  • Drive Agile best practices, including sprint planning, backlog grooming, and Jira story management.
  • Provide hands-on technical guidance when required, particularly in image processing and visualization domains.

Customization & Customer Delivery

  • Enable the team to deliver timely compelling proofs of concept.
  • Provide accurate effort estimation, define scope, and prepare Statements of Work.
  • Set clear delivery milestones and manage customer expectations throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Partner with Technical Support and Product teams to resolve post-sales technical issues.

Commercial & Revenue Alignment

  • Align development priorities with commercial objectives and AOP targets.
  • Support business development activities by evaluating technical feasibility and contributing to solution positioning.
  • Ensure customization efforts contribute to measurable revenue growth and margin objectives.
  • Strengthen cross-functional collaboration across Materials Research, Life Sciences, and Semiconductor domains.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) with:
    • 2+ years managing software development teams, or
    • 4+ years of hands-on software development and/or product management experience with leadership responsibilities.
  • Strong experience in C++ development within structured SDLC environments.
  • Proven experience managing Agile workflows using Jira (epics, stories, backlog prioritization, sprint execution).
  • Experience in image processing and/or machine learning applications.
  • Programming experience in C++, with familiarity in .NET, Java, Python, or MATLAB considered beneficial.
  • Knowledge of imaging workflows in Materials Research, Life Sciences, or Semiconductor industries preferred.
  • Experience with commercial or open-source imaging software (Avizo, Amira, Open Inventor, VG Studio Max, Simpleware, Imaris, DragonFly, ImageJ, etc.) is a strong plus.
  • Strong prioritization, organizational, and stakeholder communication skills.
  • Experience contributing to revenue-driven technical business initiatives is highly desirable.

Leadership Profile

  • Technically credible and capable of guiding C++ engineering decisions.
  • A transformational and leader who inspires action and drives results
  • Commercially aware, understanding how development execution impacts revenue and customer retention.
  • Comfortable operating at the intersection of product, engineering, field applications, and sales.
  • A builder of talent who develops high-performing, accountable engineering teams.
