Position Summary

The Patient Service Representative II (PSRII) is responsible for capturing, updating and verifying patient demographic and current insurance information to ensure maximum reimbursement for the Otolaryngology department. PSRs also schedule patient follow-up visits for providers. The PSR will serve as a liaison between consumers (staff, patients, healthcare professionals and general public) and advocates the patients’ needs.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Works on pre-arrival alerts. (i.e., insurance, referrals, etc.).
  • Updates and verifies patient insurance, billing and demographic information in EPIC for reimbursement for the patient visit. Checks eligibility either electronically or manually as needed.
  • Collects fee for service (copay, deductible, self-pay, cosmetic services, consults and surgery pre-pays and past balances etc.) and records in EPIC.
  • Checks patient in through EPIC and updates, demographics, insurance, patient portal access and verifies pharmacy information; verifies referrals received, scanned and linked to appointment.
  • Schedules return patient appointments, patient testing and procedures.
  • Maintains familiarity with insurance companies and their reimbursement policies.
  • Balances cash drawer daily.
  • Answers incoming department telephone line.
  • Checks patient out and prints After Visit Summaries (AVS) for patient.
  • May float to other locations to cover as needed. Serves as back-up for other job functions within the team during peak times, vacations, and illnesses.
  • Scans all documents from outside WU or clinical documents into medical record through EPIC.
  • Uploads imaging disks to Power Share.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills.
  • Working knowledge of insurance and financial options.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent high school certification with three years of experience in billing systems and third-party claims and/or experience in a medical office setting or related customer service/office experience or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Basic Life Support certification. (Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements.). BLS certification must be obtained within one month of hire date.

Salary Range

$17.34 - $25.40 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
