Dow Manufacturing & Engineering offers employees the opportunity to use science and engineering to build an exciting career with the opportunity to explore, exchange ideas, and make a meaningful difference on global challenges. We are looking to hire Chemical Engineering Placement Students to join us in Barry, UK, from July 2024 to July 2025 as part of your degree’s Industrial Placement. Can you picture yourself on the team?
The Placement Students will be located at our Dow Silicones Barry Site in South Wales, which is one of the largest and most complex silicones sites in the world. Barry is situated less than 10 miles from Cardiff city centre, which is home to Europe's largest waterfront development and combines the practical advantages of a small, friendly city with the cultural and recreational amenities of a successful modern capital.
During your student placement you will have the opportunity to join a team of global problem solvers impacting everything from automotive to cosmetics industries.
The Student Placements we offer are listed below:
Chemical Engineer Manufacturing placement
As a Manufacturing placement student you will work as a member of the operations team directly supporting manufacturing operations. You will also be involved in production process improvement activities.
Activities range from tracking and reporting on process plant performance and creating operating procedures to scoping, planning and executing small process plant upgrades. You may also support larger projects as a team member throughout the year.
This placement will give you an excellent practical grounding in Chemical Engineering with a bias towards production plant support.
Chemical Engineer Improvement team placement
As an Improvement team placement student you will work as a member of the team responsible for scoping and executing the site’s capital project upgrade portfolio. You will work closely with the operations team to understand the requirements of the process plants.
Activities range from carrying out chemical plants LOPA studies, to scoping, planning and executing small capital improvement project upgrades. You will also support larger projects as a team member throughout the year.
This placement will give you an excellent practical grounding in Chemical Engineering with a bias towards engineering capital project upgrades.
Chemical Engineer Process Design placement
As a Process Design placement student, you will work as a member of the design team directly supporting our pressure relief revalidation program. There will also be opportunities to support our Manufacturing and Improvement teams with their improvement projects and activities.
The activities range from P&ID development, hydraulic calculations, pump performance evaluation, relief scenario validation and site surveys.
This placement will give you an excellent practical grounding in Chemical Engineering with a bias towards process design.
Chemical Engineer Environmental placement
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Environmental Chemical Engineer intern to join our Environmental Management team at our top tier COMAH facility in South Wales.
The successful candidate will work as a key member of our environmental management team and be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing processes and technologies that minimize environmental impact and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
This role requires a strong understanding of chemical engineering principles, environmental science, and sustainability practices. This internship includes projects to reduce waste, emissions, and energy consumption, as well as monitoring and analyzing environmental data to identify areas for improvement and providing technical support to other departments and stakeholders.
Health, Safety and Environmental Engineer placement
Dow is recognized as a global leader in EH&S standards, consistently setting benchmarks for safety and environmental protection in the industry. We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join the EH&S team. The successful candidate will gain practical experience in the field of Health, Safety, and Environment at our COMAH Silicones manufacturing site in Barry, Wales. As a key member of our EH&S Delivery Team, the intern will support the manufacturing facility across various EH&S related programs. This internship provides an excellent opportunity to learn about EH&S management systems, regulatory compliance, and best practices in safety and environmental protection within the chemical industry.

You are currently studying for a master’s degree in chemical engineering including an industrial placement year.
You will need to be highly motivated and self-driven. Excellent interpersonal skills and teamwork will be necessary as you will work with multiple departments during your placement.
