The Role:

The Assistant Academic Director role at LaunchX involves leading a four-week summer entrepreneurship program for high school students at the University of California, Berkeley. The responsibilities for the role encompass various key areas that include delivering educational content and managing classroom logistics. Additionally, the role involves overseeing student progress and mentorship, coordinating guest speakers and events, and mentoring and supervising the LaunchX intern team.
This role reports to the Summer Academic Director and senior management to ensure a successful and engaging learning environment for students while demonstrating a passion for nurturing the potential of high school entrepreneurs.

The position is a temporary, full-time, four-week contract position on-site at University of California, Berkeley. This is an in-person role. LaunchX does not provide housing or transportation to campus, so the ideal candidate is a local resident of the area. Please learn more about our company at launchx.com before applying.

The Academic Director and Assistant Academic Director group training will consist of several calls during July and a few days on-campus to coordinate with the residential management team and interns, prepare classroom handouts and other materials, and set-up the mini maker space.

Responsibilities

Classroom Instruction:

  • Deliver educational content during classroom sessions.
  • Assist in facilitating student learning and engagement, ensuring effective learning outcomes and well-being throughout the program.
  • Manage classroom logistics, including course platforms, course materials, and gathering feedback from participants to identify key insights and actionable improvements.

Team and Student Mentorship:

  • Provide guidance and support to student teams and interns, addressing any disciplinary issues as needed.
  • Regularly assess student progress, offering constructive feedback on performance and addressing obstacles to success.
  • Collaborate with students to set specific goals and action plans to help them successfully run a business.
  • Offer emotional and motivational support, particularly during challenging times, reassuring students that difficulties are a normal part of the process and ensuring they feel supported.

Logistics:

  • Coordinate logistical arrangements for guest speakers, including scheduling and communication.
  • Manage the mentor network, including team matching, communications, and facilitating Mock Board meetings.
  • Organize and oversee logistics for program opening and closing events.
  • Delegate responsibilities to intern team members, providing guidance and ongoing support.
  • Involve students and interns in the creation of LaunchX marketing content, such as blog posts, classroom photos, and event photography.
  • Provide timely program updates to the Summer Academic Director.
  • Attend scheduled conference calls with senior management during the program to ensure alignment and address any issues.

Requirements

  • Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, with 1–3 years of teaching business or entrepreneurship (secondary education experience preferred).
  • Passion and Belief in Youth Potential: Strong commitment to fostering the growth and development of high school students.
  • Communication and Presentation Skills: Exceptional written, verbal, and public speaking skills, with the ability to clearly present ideas and engage audiences.
  • Project and People Management: Proven ability to manage projects, prioritize tasks, and lead a diverse team, while fostering collaboration and resolving interpersonal challenges.
  • Conflict Resolution: Patience and diplomacy in mediating team and interpersonal challenges, ensuring productive and harmonious interactions.
  • Technical Expertise and Analytical Acumen: Proficient in Google Drive, Airtable, and other learning management systems (LMS). Experience with maker spaces and related technologies is a plus. Strong ability to analyze data and leverage insights to drive informed decision-making.
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive background check;

Target Compensation: 

  • $43 USD per hour
