The opportunity:

The Catastrophe Management team provides support to Markel International in the following areas: pre-underwriting analytics, class and entity level reporting and ad-hoc analysis to support underwriting decisions.  The mission of the department is to assist Markel International in achieving consistent underwriting profit and outstanding financial results by providing a high quality service.

The role may be required to work over a number of lines of business but will be focused on supporting the Non-Natural Catastrophe team, notably on Political Violence. The candidate will be responsible for the cleansing, uploading and management of data into external modelling tools. They will assist in using modelling tools to facilitate the pricing and underwriting of business and the monitoring of aggregate accumulations. Training will be provided to the successful candidate.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Use third party catastrophe models and in-house tools for pre-underwriting analysis
  • Build and maintain a strong relationship with divisional underwriters
  • Provide ad hoc reports for underwriting portfolio analysis and reporting for senior executives
  • Use third party catastrophe models and in-house tools in the production of quarterly divisional reports
  • Data cleansing and entry into third party catastrophe models
  • Present results and ideas to senior stakeholders and underwriting teams
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues in other Markel offices
  • Assist Catastrophe Manager on ad-hoc projects

Our must-haves:

  • Proven catastrophe modelling or aggregation management experience in the London market
  • Excellent IT skills with strong knowledge of SQL
  • Proven experience with catastrophe management best practices
  • Proven experience with regulator reporting
  • Proven experience of portfolio level aggregation techniques
  • Experience of building and maintaining successful relationships with internal and external contacts
  • The ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines
  • Completed a numerical degree with a classification of 2:1 or above, or equivalent
