Position Summary

The role of Engagement and Annual Giving Programs is to build a strong and lasting connection between the university and its community, nurturing a sense of pride, belonging, and active involvement. We strive to establish a pathway that enables alumni, parents, and friends to develop a lifelong philanthropic relationship with WashU, contributing to its growth, sustainability, and continued excellence.

The Networks team works closely with our colleagues across Advancement and with alumni and parent volunteers to create meaningful engagement opportunities through the regional, shared interest and cultural, and professional industry networks.

The Director, Alumni Networks will work closely with the Senior Director, Alumni Networks in overseeing activity designed to increase engagement in assigned regions. The Director will ensure alignment between the university’s priorities and the needs of alumni, parents, and friends. The Director will develop programs which feature the University’s chancellor, provost, deans, faculty members, and distinguished alumni, as well as social, networking, and cultural activities.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee the management of Regional, Professional and Industry, and Shared Interest and Cultural Networks within assigned regions to build a strong Washington University presence. Coordinate the efforts of Regional Cabinets within the cities and corresponding Regional Cabinet committees. Collaborate with University Advancement colleagues and colleagues across campus to ensure that programming meets broad University objectives and makes the most effective use of University resources. Travel frequently to meet with alumni in assigned region to build participation in all areas of the university, including but not limited to reunion committees, annual fund support, and the Alumni & Parents Admission Program.
  • Manage in-person and virtual events including strategy, planning and execution. Secure event space, work with external vendors, caterers, and service providers; provide direction to administrative staff who will process reservations and assist with event logistics, develop briefings for colleagues who will be working at the events; and provide event summaries and analysis.
  • Identify, cultivate, and train volunteers. Communicate frequently with volunteers and meet with them as needed. Provide recommendations and support to volunteers who develop and implement a schedule of attractive and diverse programs aimed at engaging alumni.
  • Manage up to two Associate Directors or Senior Associate Directors, and a shared Administrative Assistant.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in alumni relations, event planning, higher education, public relations, sales, marketing, or a related field.
  • Management experience.
  • Event planning experience and working with volunteers..
  • Enthusiasm for the mission of Washington University, matched by a desire to reflect its excellence.
  • Ability to manage details of multiple events.
  • Superior interpersonal, written and oral communication skill.
  • Ability to manage staff.
  • Flexibility in a fast-paced and complex organizational environment.
  • Ability to listen and learn.
  • Ability to remain focused on multiple priorities and work collaboratively with colleagues across the University.
  • Strong work ethic, a sense of commitment, and personal initiative are integral to this role.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Five years of related experience.

Salary Range

$75,200.00 - $128,800.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
