INTERNSHIP DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: USIL Facultative Underwriting is the individual life risk assessment department of RGA. Facultative reinsurance is designed to cover individual risks. With facultative reinsurance transactions, the ceding company offers an individual risk to a reinsurer for medical or financial assessment in order to obtain a more competitive offer. The reinsurer retains the right to accept or reject the risk, just like the primary insurer has the right to decide whether to insure a policyholder. Under a facultative arrangement, the reinsurer will perform its own underwriting for some or all of the policies to be reinsured. Facultative reinsurance is typically used for high-value, complex medical, and hazardous risks where the reinsurer can provide a more competitive offer and assume the risk.
