Job Details:

Purpose 

Texas Science & Natural History Museum is developing new exhibits, programs, and experiences that spark curiosity, promote belonging, and tell stories about Texas science and natural history. The Museum seeks a Visitor Services Assistant I to contribute to admissions and gift store operations for Summer 2026 This position will end 8/31/26. 

 
Responsibilities 

  • Welcome and check in visitors; sell tickets to visitors.  Assist visitors with wayfinding and orient visitors to the exhibitions and programs at the museum; accurately answer visitor questions. Work collaboratively with museum staff and volunteers. Answer phone and accurately field questions.
  • Process ticket sales, merchandise sales, membership sales, and refunds using a credit card machine. Accurately record sales and receipts using the Altru point-of-sale program. Restock merchandise in the gift shop. Inventory management which includes processing inventory shipments, organizing and displaying new merchandise and assisting with quarterly inventory counts. 

  • Assist with group visit operations. Collect constituent information, encourage enrollment in the membership program. 

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications 

  • Extensive customer service experience. 

  • Strong interpersonal and critical thinking skills. 

  • Success working independently and as part of a team.  

  • Ability to interact and maintain productive working relationships with staff, students, visitors, and educators.  

  • Ability to learn quickly and be flexible 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience working in museums, nature centers, or other cultural institutions.  

Working Conditions 

  • Extended periods of standing. 

  • Working at a desk and computer for extended periods, including repetitive use of a keyboard. 

  • Use of manual dexterity.  

  • Occasional climbing of ladders and stairs.  

  • Occasional lifting and moving 25+ lbs.  

  • Occasional work around electrical and mechanical hazards; heavy equipment. 

 

Work Shift 

  • 20 hours per week 

  • Tuesday through Sunday (variable) 

  • Weekends required 

  • This position will end 8/31/26.
