What You’ll Do
The Director of Marketing is responsible for strategically developing the following: Media relations both locally, regionally, and nationally; advertising/promotional campaigns for the Freeman Health System and its products/services, special events planning, community involvement, internal communications and crisis communication.
Essential Functions
1. Cultivates media relationships and monitors news coverage of both the System and its competitors. The director works through appropriate staff members to garner a significant amount of positive news coverage for the system and its physicians. Acts as a media consultant to the executive staff in times of media crisis. Makes recommendations to executive staff to identify media opportunities and troubleshoot media coverage.
2. Responsible for the development and implementation of the image of the System as it pertains to advertising and communications. Oversees concept and design of such pieces to ensure the protection and enhancement of the Freeman brand. Strives to monitor all use of the Freeman name, logo, etc.
3. Analyzes advertising venues and makes media (advertising) placement decisions accordingly. Maintains a good reach and frequency of advertising at all times concerning the advertising budget and specific product goals. Utilizes a reasonable variety of media outlets for advertising.
4. Prepares and implements marketing budget based upon research and in accordance with System strategies and goals. Maintains flexibility in relation to the annual budget to provide for marketing opportunities throughout the year. Analyze requests from other departments that affect the marketing budget to determine their value and necessity based on promotional, financial, and political ramifications.
5. Acts as an advisor to the CEO on matters about media interviews, media crises, and any other matters with public relations ramifications. Garners and oversees positive publicity surrounding the CEO. This includes pursuing opportunities on behalf of the CEO that enhance the image of the System such as relevant award submissions, strategically valuable speaking engagements and other public appearances.
6. Develop and maintain an effective internal communications program utilizing different communication tools such as direct mail, electronic mail, etc. for employees, including physicians. Information communicated to employees is based upon current events in the System and healthcare industry as well as programs, policies, and benefits affecting employees and physicians.
7. Manages the marketing department and ensures that projects are prioritized based on the needs of the System. The director of Marketing manages deadlines, delegates workload, and monitors the quality of marketing projects.
Knowledge
1.Must have exceptional grasp of marketing concepts as they relate to healthcare.
2.Must have in depth knowledge of the functions of media outlets including television, print, magazine and radio locally, regionally, and nationally in order to successfully “pitch” to each outlet.
3.Must have in-depth knowledge of advertising strategies as well as a working knowledge of the tools used to evaluate and quantify the value of individual advertising avenues.
4. Must maintain current knowledge of healthcare and healthcare marketing issues both nationally and regionally.
Skills Abilities
1. Ability to monitor the department budget and recognize irregularities.
2. Ability to solve problems both within the department and on behalf of the Freeman Health System.
3. Ability to train and mentor department employees to build a “succession” of eligible employees prepared to operate the department smoothly in the absence of the director.
4. Ability to work creatively with diverse and often complicated subject matter.
5. Ability to work with all types of people with diverse different educational backgrounds.
Working Conditions
1. Ability to work with difficult individuals positively.
2. May require day, evening, and weekend work schedules.
3. Some travel to outlying locations as well as educational seminars.
4. Typical office environment.
5. Work under stressful conditions and irregular hours to meet the needs of the department.
Physical Demands
1. Employee lifts/carries 50# occasionally.
Requirements
1. At least 5 years of experience in marketing or a related field is required.
2. Bachelor’s degree, preferred in Marketing, Business, Journalism, or related field
Preferred Requirements
1. Management experience in marketing or related field preferred.
