THE ROLE

Xylem seeks to hire a Reservoir Center Water Quality Data Intern to support our DC River Water Quality Monitoring Program.  This program is a partnership between Xylem and three DC area watershed organizations. The project is focused on increasing the water quality data collected along the rivers in an effort to assist in having swimable and fishable rivers in the DC region. The intern will assist with data management from 10 real-time water quality data monitoring sites along the Potomac, Shenandoah and Anacostia Rivers. This is a hybrid, part-time (20 hours per week, 6-month internship) with the possibility of extending the duration.

The Reservoir Center for Water Solutions – or “Reservoir” for short - serves as a place to bring together stakeholders across the global water community and collaborate on solving global water challenges.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain data platform and verify and clean data
  • Develop training documents to assist program partners in maintaining water quality monitoring equipment and data
  • Serve as project assistant for the development of the web-based data visualization platform
  • Regularly connect with partner organizations to understand their data needs and assist in developing reports or data visualizations they may need
  • Perform statistical analysis, identify trends and patterns, and interpret data to extract valuable insights on water quality trends
  • Contribute to the creation of reports that summarize data analysis results and provide recommendations
  • Serve as project liaison between Xylem/the Reservoir Center and external stakeholders.

Essential Skills:

  • Pursuit of Bachelor’s or Graduate Degree in environmental science, data science, etc.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical skills
  • Comfortable working within cloud-based platforms.
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate data insights, both verbally and in writing
  • Experience with Power BI and Microsoft based tools
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment, both independently and as part of a team

Preferred experience includes:

  • Monitoring of surface water, groundwater, or stormwater
  • Understanding of water quality parameters and sampling procedures
  • Analyzing environmental data and creating data visualizations and reports
  • Using geographic information systems (GIS) or programming languages such as R or Python.
